Title: Sense8 - do you / have you watched it? Has it affected you?
Post by: Bols on June 13, 2017, 07:27:39 PM
Sense8 on Netflix has been in the media acutely recently. It was canceled start of the month, due to business decisions (as stated by Netflix).

I wanted to have an open discussion on if this show has affected you, and how.

My experience has been positive, but if yours has been negative, please also feel free to comment. We do not judge here. [emoji177]

I enjoyed it, but wouldn't say it affected me. I just don't get that kind of value out of music/movies/tv show, i guess.

After watching the first two episodes of Sense8, (especially S01E02), I was surprised.

I knew I might be moved. But I was shocked by the empowerment I felt through the character Naomi.

I think she was part of the final confidence I needed to come out as me public and full time.

A lot of people have suggested that their word has crumbed due to the cancelation, but for me, I'm so much more and infinitely greater than just one television show. So, for me it has been a show I somatically resonated with (I'm a hapless romantic), but because I'm militant with regard to expression of love and the solidarity of the human race. Love and respect. We're all in the same boat on this pale blue dot.

For me, it was about systematic thinking of us as a diverse group, and common ground, within diversity.

I enjoyed the first season. But I thought there were too many unnecessary sex scenes. And I'm not a prude! They just seemed thrown in for the sake of it.

I was looking forward to the show returning. But I found the holiday special annoying. I'm not sure why. I never finished it.

I will watch the 2rd season though, and I'm sorry to see it was canceled.

I hope the cancellation does not hold true, or that the creators can pick take the remaining idea elsewhere.

Tracking all the open story lines through the end of the second, season, it may be that Netflix saw no way to ever cost effectively bring the story to a close.  I suspect there is more to the cancellation that has trickled out thus far and it may very well have something to do with money.

That said, Sense8 was one of the finest serialized media works ever made as it was ultimately uplifting and positive.

My wife and I really enjoyed the series and were both pretty disappointed when we heard of the cancellation.  It had some powerful messages and a real touching side to it....I was emotional after more than a few scenes.  Unfortunately, it likely came down to money as it's been reported that it cost over 100million/season or 9million/episode to produce.

I watched it end-to-end and wanted for more, and am deeply sad it has been cancelled. I hope Lana will find a way to finish the saga somehow anyway.

It has so many great things in it - Mix of cultures, showing both gay and straight people being both good and bad, showing rejection and acceptance in the family, sex scenes (good for ratings and gaining acceptance for LGBT people).

But it is a very shallow scenario, just an action movie series, especially in 2nd season. Those guys were more or less normal, and suddenly they became next to superheroes. It's something easy to watch once, and forget about it. Maybe it might become a revelation to some uneducated straight people, but I couldn't find anything touching me deeply. Just another action series.

I watched "Fosters" after "Sense8".... Girl, that one touched me a lot - mostly how they are growing their foster/adopted children, deal with their teenage issues, with their day-to-day challenges in partnership, with "no secrets" policy. And thanks to that, they are still in love after 10 years of marriage, very inclusive to their ex-es, children biological families, and so on. It made me thinking.... a lot

I am late to life in actively dealing with being trans even though I have been the way that I am my whole life.  I've only been in therapy the last 3 years and I am in my early 50s.  I'd recognize in myself that over my lifetime I have enjoyed more than my share of white male privilege.  There are a lot of very real issues out there that I was never exposed to and never thought to go searching for.

Sense8 just on its own is an original idea in a universe of media where most stories are just derivative, or worse, prequels, sequels, and spinoffs.  I have truly enjoyed the unfolding realization on the mystery of how they were all bound together and how the Sensates impacted each others lives.

As a transgender person, having an actual transgender character like Nomi as an integral main character to the story and not being portrayed as a man in a dress, psychologically disturbed, or for comedic value is incredibly validating.  That Jamie Clayton is a transwoman playing Nomi, it really gives me something to cheer for.  The way that her relationship with Amanita is portrayed gives hope to a lot of lonely transpeople with regards to finding love.  I've been married for 25+ years and so far my relationship has been weathering the change that comes from dealing with things, but I have made plenty of friends "in community" that are alone, and I like knowing that this bright spot of hope is there for them.

The area that has impacted me the most, though, it has led me to search out as to what intersectionality really means.  Besides coming to terms with my faith, this is one of the non-trans areas I have spent a lot of time on over the last year or so and I haven't even scratched the surface.  It's always a little sad that it takes fictional characters to generate an emotional response, but it is even sadder to never know there are very real things going on in the world and yet think you have full awareness.  It is not a political show, which is exactly why the fact that this show exists is such a bold political statement.

I loved the show and was moved to joy, tears, fear, and other emotions frequently.  Nomi was someone with whom I obviously identified with and my wife identified with Amanita.  Lito and his relationship and life battles were near and dear to us, too, as well as the budding romantic relationships within the group of 8.  And, let's not forget the intrigue, plot twists, theory of homo sensoriums!  Just awesome, if you ask me.  I really wish the Netflix execs would have consulted me before pulling it....

I also really enjoyed the show and to some extent Jamie Clayton's character really helped me recognize the inner woman in me and wanting to transition. I liked the different cultures represented and how they were very bold in trying to take on so many hot topics. It is a shame that it was canceled, I really wanted to see how the characters evolved as the story progressed.

Is this show really good? After reading about it here I started watching it but the idea of someone being held prisoner in a hospital and being forced to have brain surgery they don't want was just too absurd. It seems more like something they would do in the 50s. Unless you are a raving nut or suicide case a hospital can't do squat to you without permission. And unless you get locked in like the nut ward you can leave anytime you want. After that the show lost any credibility for me and I stopped watching it. Is it worth watching more?

I did start watching more of it. Its gotten better and I like it now. Is the girl that plays Nomi really trans? I thought she was but my brother says no she's a cis girl. I know Sofia on OITNB is trans in real life.

Yes, Jamie Clayton is really trans.  And 100% awesome!  I am so glad you decided to go deeper into the show.

"I think what people need to realize is that, with trans people, we're like everybody else. No group of people are all the same. All women are not the same, all men are not the same, all children are not the same. It's the same thing with trans people - we're all so different, we have different goals, different dreams, and different aspirations."  Jamie Clayton

That's awesome!  I hope it happens.  The hard part will be how the viewing rights are handled.  It'll be tough to have the property split between two streamers.  That'll devalue it a bit.  Whatever they do, I hope it happens soon.  The longer it goes, the more likely one of the principle performers will sign on with another project.

While I'd like to see another series, I just don'y think it's going to happen. The production costs must be ridiculous, which is essentially the reason given for it's cancellation. I also wonder just where they can take the story?

Watched it, Loved it, too bad it didn't get the ratings it was looking for in the huge budget they had into producing it.
I think it is just a head of it's current time like how Firefly was back in the day.

Hopefully someone will pick up the pace or get it enough to get them to at least produce a closing film.

I believe it was second or third highest cost among all Netflix original content.

The travel costs were a huge piece of the budget.  I bet if they filmed 2 seasons at the same time, they could drive that cost down significantly.

Don't know if you are all aware but a 2 hour finale in 2018 will bring the series to an end.

I saw that as well and I immediately thought that it will be very hard to close all the plots in just 2 hours in a satisfying way. I hope they'll be able to pull it off but until I saw this I was hoping that they'll be able to continue the series somehow and now I'm a little sad that we are just '2 hours' away from the end.

Omg I had no idea that the show was being canceled until I just happened to come across this thread. I'm so upset about that, I loved this show.  :'( Besides Jamie Clayton being ->-bleeped-<-ing awesome! (Second season a certain scene with her had me bawling away) I really loved the whole thing as a whole. So sad and I hardly get into to shows either, meh.

Watched both seasons; when the first one came out 2 years ago I wasn't planning on transitioning but the second one premiered right at the beginning of my transition so it definitely affected me in a positive way. I remember watching some episodes and feeling like they were talking to me, like they were talking about my transition. There are some specific quotes from that season that really got to me:

-Pretending isn't a life.
-Nothing changes if we keep playing it safe.
-There's nothing more frightening that having a dream come true.
-From queer to eternity.
