Hi everyone. A while ago I posted about how badly trans people are portrayed on TV and in the movies. I just finished watching American horror story hotel on Netflix. I totally loved the character of Liz Taylor! She's a transwoman and the bartender at the hotel. She's played by Dennis O Hare. Liz Taylor doesn't look like a woman. But her character still really works. I loved her storylines. How Elizabeth the hotel owner and queen Upir (played by lady gaga) transformed her into Liz Taylor, how her adult son accepted her as Liz and how she ended up with a 26 year old male model as a boyfriend. After seeing so many characters that mock transgender people I really loved this character. It doesn't even matter that she isn't passable. Her character is awesome.
Julia,
Agree! I sometimes felt as if non-normative gender presentations had tended to irritate my own dysphoria, as if they were emphasizing male aspects of my own appearance. But seeing Liz's story, and perceiving her as all woman gave me a better perspective and helped me to widen my own definition of womanhood in my mind. I wasn't too excited about Dennis' character and performance in "Coven," but I thought that his character in "Hotel," Liz Taylor, was maybe a little transformational for me, in the same way I think "Transparent" has been for lots of people.

I absolutely loved Liz as well. The fact that she was non passable actually made the story and her character so much stronger and more interesting.
I haven't seen many trans characters on tv and I never watched American horror story. Venus van dam on Son's of anarchy and transparent. Candis cayne was on elementary a couple times. It's nice when there are sympathetic and realistic characters.
