Title: Pennsylvania, California, or Florida for GRS
Post by: whovian239342 on July 11, 2017, 10:00:46 AM
I am now going into my second month of estradiol so I am nowhere near ready for this but I am also super excited for the next step in my transition but now on to the question.

Does one state have better SRS surgeons than another? These were states Iw as thinking of getting my surgery done.

I found out my insurance covers it. I figure if the doctors are just as good in Pensylvania as they are in Florida it will save me money on airfare.

I figure I will have to do a lot more research so I will be prepared for when that day arrives but I figured I would present this question here.

Totally agree with Tina, forget about Florida's GRS surgeons!

California and PA have excellent ones. Also Arizona

I live in Florida and I'm considering flying to PA to see McGinn so I see no reason for you to spend money to fly down here. Our beaches are worth it, the surgeons probably not[emoji12][emoji12]

I've traveled extensively over the years but was shocked at how airfares dropped like a rock when you "bundled a hotel" with them. It changed my search for a surgeon because I could get a cheap flight anywhere in the US. (I live in the Midwest)

Bottom-line is I'm having surgery at NYU in New York City next month.  NYC is a bit more expensive in other ways, but in the long run, not enough to matter . . .  so IMHO don't let the surgeon's location influence your decision . . .

I am taking advice on Pennsylvania.

I tried McGinn and she doesn't take insurance so there's another surgeon in PA I got in touch with and left a message.

My search for surgeons that accept insurance continues.

The Florida surgeons are either very old and about to retire or very inexperienced. Maybe in a few years the newer surgeons will have repeatable results.

Fortunately, i am only 2 months in with my hormones so I still have months before anything is truly noticeable. I am hoping in a year or so things will improve or I will figure out a way to raise the money so I don't have to go through health insurance.

I went to Dr. McGinn in New Hope, PA. The hospital she operates out of is Lower Bucks in Bristol PA. I really need to go to skilled a surgeon such a Dr. McGinn for my anatomy issues. She and her team are awesome.

Lower Bucks Hospital has some really nice staff. I talked to the people that came into my room and elsewhere and had great conversations.

She is one year out for consults. Get your letters together (requirements on her website) and get a consult scheduled. I have seen presentations from the other two Philly area surgeons several times. Because of my anatomy I needed to go to McGinn and out of country was out of the question.

If you have a typical anatomy them that opens up your choices of surgeons. I had GCS and 2 GCS procedure with her and I will have another at the one year mark. She rocks.

Dr Meltzer's office accepts insurance but not medicare. While Dr. Meltzer is pretty booked up, Dr Ley who shares the office seems to have a much more open calendar.

Hi All,

This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for a few months...

I live in Florida, and while I would love to go to Bowers or McGinn when I get to that point (22 days HRT, so a long way to go), I see that the University of Miami opened a huge new Transgender center in January, led by Christopher Salgado. Are you all including his practice when you say the surgeons here are substandard? It sure would be nicer to recover at home intead of a hotel...

STAY AWAY FROM MIAMI SURGEONS!

Not from personal experience, but from the experience of a very good friend who just had reconstructive surgery a month ago.

Look at Dr Keelee MacPhee in Raleigh, North Carolina (affiliated with Duke U).

I admit I try to stay out of Miami for any reason.  :o I was just hoping that an organization as high-profile as the U of Miami would have someone reputable on their staff. Nobody seems to know anything about Salgado. Oh well, I'll keep watching. It'll be at least a year before I'm ready anyhow.

I have read good things about McPhee.

I'll just throw this out there since I had a good experience and result with her.

Dr. Sidhbh (pronounced Sive) Gallagher is with Indiana Univesity Health in Downtown Indianapolis. She takes insurance.

I have a lot of respect for the surgeons who are willing to make GCS surgeries their primary focus and priority. They are forced to deal with much of the same politics we are albeit from a different angle.

Dr Salgado is with U of Miami. He has done SRS, especially colon vaginoplasty.  I do not know his total number of surgeries, but I have personally talked to one of his colon vaginoplasty patients and she was very happy with the depth she got from his technique.

Since there are very few surgeons who do colon vaginoplasty anywhere in the world, I would do a consult with him if I needed to go that route.

Dr. Sherman Leis did my correction (revision) surgery of Dr. Pichet's work, and he (the former!) was excellent!

Dr. Leis has excellent bedside manner, he's a very civilized and spirited guy overall. He did have an assistant working with him who I guess will succeed his practice eventually. Dr. Leis is old, but his energy and skill will delight and impress you. Recovery in the private apartments he rents out was very comfortable and affordable.

He even helped me phone-conference with my health insurance when they initially refused to cover my revision. I remember him saying how they had the photos and asking, "Does this look even remotely normal to you? Does it even look male OR female?" Eventually the insurance ended up covering about 75% of it.

What he fixed - I had a protruding urethral meatus, a poorly-done, non-sensate 'clitoris', and too much bulbo-cavernosa and corpus-cavernosa muscle. Despite Pichet's due reputation as "the butcher of Bangkok", to his credit he actually was successful at creating the vaginal canal with my limited existing tissue, and managed to preserve the sensate nerve endings - when I indicated where these were to Dr. Leis, he was likewise able to preserve them and set them into natural areas all along my new vulva.

I'd recommend Dr. Leis and most likely his apprentice as well! I hear good things about Dr. McGinn as well, who is of course also in the same area.

Because they are local to the Miami area.

To travel out of state, they have to bring their film crew with them as well.
