Title: Name change!(?)
Post by: ds1987 on July 27, 2017, 04:55:57 PM
Hi all!  I haven't been on in a while, a lot going on here, most of it really really good.  I've begun introducing myself as Aria to new people, had a fabulous weekend in NYC, and started a new job where they all recognize me as Aria too.

I've handed in the forms for both my birth certificate and RMV name/gender change to my doctor, and got a call today to verify a few things.  The process is painless, the case manager fills it out, has my doctor sign off, and gets it notarized.  Then I'd just need to hand it in to the court system and wait a bit...

I'm really really excited, but also terrified.  I wear a bra every day, am happy the my breast buds are starting to grow, and when I looked at an older pic of me as a guy it was like looking at someone I'd met before, and the detachment was strong enough that I don't feel at all like him anymore.  But the name change is a HUGE step...I know I'm ready, but wow.  I have an appt with my doc in four weeks, so it's not gonna happen immediately.

How long did you all wait during your transition/since starting hormones before changing your name?

I changed my name/gender a year before I started HRT.  When I changed it, I didn't know if/when I would be starting HRT.

wow, congrats on everything!

I just started HRT a week and a half ago, but I think it's going to be a long time before I legally change my name. I have to stay at my job halfway into next year or else I'll lose the pension I've been working for for the last 6 years, ugh. Everyone's situation is different though! glad to hear things are going well for you!  :)

I started HRT in November, 9 months ago, and I'm about to start the name change... Maybe tomorrow.

Congratulations, Aria!

I started working on my name change when I went full-time, about three months after starting HRT.  My application was complicated by having a foreign birth certificate, but the name change certificate finally arrived last week.  So far, I have changed my name on my driver's license and my social insurance number.  (If only I could also get my gender changed everywhere, I would be happy, but that won't happen for a couple of years.)

hey there, Aria.  I was already full-time when I got my name change; that was relatively painless and did not cost anything other than the filing fee.  Went in with the letter from the doctor and it was granted.  The gender marker change was a little bit different though as that one cost me $1500 and a couple of hoops to jump through.

DPS was a major pain in the ass to change the marker on my license, but they came around nicely and went along with the program.  Social Security card was a breeze, but that may be subject to change as who knows what El Presidente has in mind or how else he will use us as a tool to deflect whatever shenanigans he may or may not have been involved in.  I almost forgot; my birth certificate change was surprisingly easy as all the required was the court order for my gender marker change.  Indiana, at least as of a few months ago, did not require a letter from the doctor, just the court order.

Hope this helps and way to go, girl!!!!!

I changed my name in July of this year, and have yet to start on HRT.

And you know what, despite the initial 'oh this might go badly for me...', changing my name has given me a huge boost in confidence as I'm now referred to as male like I feel I should have always been. Maybe that's just me, but I consider it one of the better things I've done to help my mentality.

Congratulations on all you've achieved!
Apparently here in the UK you're supposed to change your name before you get hormones. Don't know how true that is, but since I want to change it anyway, I'll get it done before I start hormones (still on the waiting list right now). Only problem is I'm not sure what to change my name to! The name people call me is a shortened (and unisex) form of my birth name, don't know if I should just to switch it to its male form or go with something else.

I'm just in the beginning of the process, I haven't started HRT yet, but I plan on choosing a more androgynous name like Casey. I'll probably start telling people to call me that way after a few months of HRT and change my name officially after maybe a year or something^^ Things may change, but it looks good for now.
Changing name is a so important step! It literally makes the cut between your old self and your new one. And I look forward to it^^

2 weeks on HRT, and 3 months right now since deciding to transition. I'm planning on doing the legal name & gender change for my drivers license & social security this December (fingers crossed!). Birth Certificate is a little complicated, but I'll get that done later (I've never had to show it for anything, so hopefully nothing comes up before then).
