Title: Photo Sharing service of choice
Post by: Dani on July 29, 2017, 07:27:13 AM
Now that Photobucket is having a hissie fit, which photo sharing service are you all using and why is this your choice?

I'm sitting here wringing my hands because I don't want to pay for picture hosting, but Photobucket has currently destroyed a couple thousand of my posts here.  :-\

Oh no,  can I ask what's happened? I use PB,  and my pics still appear to be there.

It's not free,  but an Amazon AWS S3 bucket with static Web hosting enabled would let you host images for very low costs.

Page 1  (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,224896.0.html) of the Fabulous thread gives a good idea of the issue.

I am using imgur for all my pictures in this site, and they are still free.

Ah,  I see,  I guess others may also get caught by this eventually too. [emoji853]

I switched to Flickr after PB implemented their new policy and after getting use to it... I totally prefer it... Very easy to use...PB was sooooo slow and pop up
heavy and would constantly jam up.... The only downside is it is not possible to get the BB link code that works here on the forum from an Apple IOS device... I have to use the full website on my PC laptop... Until I figured that part out the first day I may have replaced the "I" in their name with a "U" more than a few times!!!!.... 😀

Onward we post!!!

Ashley :)

I only had about a dozen images stored there and I am debating my options before I put up another image. One possibility is setting up the web server on my Mac Pro and letting it host the images as the system is up 24/7. I have a 5 Mb up link so while the pictures might be a little slow to load, it shouldn't be to bad. Almost $400 a year for a dozen images is really getting carried away.

Imgur, hands down the best, fast, free, full resolution, app on the phone, multiple photo uploads, upload privately or publicly.

Imgur always. Free and very easy.

You know, this Photobucket thing really makes me angry. I have 800 images there going back nine years that have been nearly all posted on forums. Now they want something crazy like $500 bucks a year for the right use your photos on forums? Get real.

Considering the link at the bottom of each picture already contains IMG tags, because the whole point of Photobucket is to post your links on forums and they know it, this seems like a pretty shady practice to me.

Here, we'll make it handy for you to embed your images on forums and stuff and then once you do, we'll turn around and hold the display of your pictures hostage until you buy one of our tremendously expensive plans. Then we're going to send you some "courtesy" emails to remind you about it.

I've written to them letting them know that since this was allowed in the past and is still encouraged today, I think this change in their policy amounts to blackmail considering there no reasonably priced plans that allows 3rd party hosting.

[/rant] Sorry, just had to get it out. All future images will be hosted on my own website but if all my PB images get blocked, it's going to leave holes in the internet!  :)

I often find myself using tinypic.com for uploads. The ads can be a hassle, but it has always been completely free to use.

[emoji27] OH NO!  PB is making you PAY now?  I have a few hundred pics on my favorite Asian Ball-Jointed Doll (BJD) forum, dating back to 2007 that are all hosted on it!  WTF?  I was hoping that PB would be free forever!  I know that "men aren't supposed to cry [emoji6]" but [emoji24]

I might have to look into Imgur.

Edit: Okay, after looking into Imgur, apparently they have shrunk their image size due to "border issues," (my quotes) but they now TRACK you.  No thanks!

I found an article about "what to use since PB now charges," that gives alternative pic hosting suggestions.  Mods, am I allowed to link it here?

What we mainly are concerned about copyright issues and spam where some how or another you are making a buck off the link. In addition, the content must conform to the TOS. If it's an article, you are limited to how much of it you copy and paste here under fair usage (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,174951.0.html) but just a link  solves the problem of posting to much text.

What are you using as a phone?
Just search Imgur in the play store?

Okay, thanks so much for explaining, Dena! [emoji1]

Here's the link I was talking about before.

I'm leaning towards vgy.me.  Can anyone tell me about this site?
