Just starting to get a plan together for this important step: So i am a resident of Oregon and the state just made it pretty easy to change state ID to the proper stuff.
I understand all the federal stuff like social security requires therapists letters. My birth state of Minnesota requires that for an amended birth certificate, but requires an appearance before a judge with two witnesses for a name change.
How can i amend my birth certificate without changing my official name in that state? That seems like a problem. Also if i change my name and marker in Oregon and presumably get the federal stuff changed with letters and the proof of ID, it seems like the birth certificate is a pretty important thing.
Does it sound like i am stuck with having to go to Minnesota?
You should be able to get your legal name change in Oregon and use a certified copy of that order, an original "ACT" letter from your doctor (Appropriate Clinical Treatment) and a notarized application form to get your birth record changed in Minnesota. You will not need to appear before a judge in Minnesota.

Thanks Jess - so in a sense the birth document is the only thing necessary in Minnesota - that makes sense. I feel better now.

Yup, it's a two step process. Take care of everything in Oregon, then send the legal papers back to Minnesota to change your BC afterwards. You just have to send anything they require, make payment, and wait. I'm in this process myself. I was born and raised in NY, but have been a resident of NM for the last 20 years. Each state has their own rules for everything.
