Title: Help me pick a name?!?!?
Post by: cali4niaagirl on August 12, 2017, 02:11:22 AM
Hey y'all, I am 18 and looking for a name. I am also thinking of changing my last name, so if anyone has any input on that, that would be great!

My first name ideas:

Rayna
Maddison
Bria
Blair
Nevada
Fallon
Brynn
Dionne
Nova
Shasta
Alayna

Moderator Edit: I combined two topics into one. This consolidates all the information gathered and also takes care of Cross Posting. This is why this post has a few more names than the poll.

That depends on how you see yourself.
Most of the names on your list are ambiguous, appropriate for both genders.
Do you want names that are only slightly feminine?

Perhaps a particular genre of film, book series, sport, history, or game could inspire an interesting name.

Well... I'd say it's one of the decisions you must take, and nobody else! [emoji4] I chose a name starting with the same letter as my baptism name, which was relatively common in my birth country when I was born and which pleased me... Sarah.

I also stuck with the same initials as my birth names. I also looked at the popular names lists for my birth year,  so my name would be typical for my age.

I did the same. It's a good way to fit into your age group, but it's also conforming to normative naming standards, so that may or may not be important to you.  I weeded out names that friends, relatives and famous people shared until I found that almost every name has been used once before, and that didn't automatically disqualify it.  I also included my wife in the process, and got from her an honest and useful opinion on how various names might be interpreted.  So a close friend, relative or lover can be a good sounding board for your candidate names.

But like Sarah said, it's ultimately your decision alone, and if some other name sings out to you, then you should choose it if it makes you happy.

Wow Nevada said as a first name sounds really awesome... Nevada. I am bias though I love the state and the desert and you will have to deal with people who pronounce Nev-AH-da (it is Nev-ADD-a). I just took Christopher (not sensitive toward my dead name) which is extremely gendered, took Christina right out of consideration from the start, thought about Crissy which was what my Nana (and every other female in the family, but Nana matters more) called me my whole life, then I went with Christy... Christy, with a Y. I did take my Nana's maiden name though.
I think names, at least my name to me, and what others have also posted, are very person choices.

But Nevada is awesome  ;) just say'n  :icon_mrhappy:

That's really something you need to decide yourself.  But I will make one suggestion.  Shasta sounds like someone's drag name. I would drop that one as a possibility.  Just my opinion.

The correct answer was Zelda.

Nevada is 150 miles (250 km) from Shasta California.  ;)

I think this is rare, but my parents are handling my transition extremely well at their age (86) - so I am going to ask them to choose my middle name.

I would avoid Alayna as it is too similar to Allanah Starr.

I can't help you pick from that list.  Not only did none of those choices even exist as names when I was young, but you can't tell another adult what their name should be.  That has to be your own choice.

I wanted to keep my initials the same, and I wanted a name that would be age-appropriate for my generation.  My wife gave me all sorts of suggestions, but none of them sounded like me.  Kathy did.

I used the first initial from my birth name & I had a crush once on a girl called Sara so it stuck.

The first person I came out to renamed me, from Tracey to Devlyn. She said her daughter was going to be Shannon or Devlyn and Shannon won. Then I came along and gave her the chance to name someone Devlyn.  :)

Cali (for now)

Welcome to the site.

You posted two topics that are nearly identical. This is what we call cross posting. It is not allowed on the site. I have merged your two topics into one.

If you could take a moment to read the links that Cindy left you, they define our rules.

I agree with much of what the others said. Names, according to stories and some beliefs have names. So, they should have some meaning for you. Personal, or through definition(lots of sites will define a name for you). I personally agree that the name should be appropriate for the year you were born. But hey, it's your gig. Do as you see fit. ;)

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline

Growing up I was constantly being called the girl version of the name my parents gave me, even though they were teasing I always loved hearing it....it's who I am ❤️

I voted for Madison.  But as others suggested, it might be worthwhile considering age appropriateness??

From looking at all your options, I'm guessing you are quite young?

I picked Sherie and remember girls my age with that name.  Caitlyn Jenner doesn't quite fit for an older woman.

Just my opinion.  In the end, what makes you happy?

I always loved the name Madison, loved it since I seen the filmed splash, about the mermaid.
I always wanted to call a daughter that one day :)

But ultimately, it is none of my business.  If you pick Shasta or Pepsi, you are still welcome here.

Brigitte de Despoina (I like Brigitte a lot, and Despoina means my+lady  'which earlier in times meant Madonna; I wouldn't use Madonna as a name though lol)

Brigitte de Lamoure (that sounds cool to me)

Brigitte de Bourbon

Raynai del Lamia  (queen, lamia is name of the snake that Eve was tempted by)

Alayna de Lorraine

Joséphine de Borbon

Anna Constantinople

Madison Antoinette

(This sounds like a beautiful princess in France with golden brown hair that went into a sleep of death by eating a peach from a handsome blonde archer in the forest (after many trials with him in the forest) she has a guardian fairy (angel) that can only do so much; and her body laid there in frozen, as he takes her into a boat into the river, by the request of a jealous witch princess in another village who envies her beauty and only a blood sacrifice can reverse it of a man in love, and .... and the boat landed at a cabin of an old couple who realize still alive in slumber, and place into the a beautiful bed until she awakens from the coma. The couple eventually pass away, but left notes of her existence (she spoke in her sleep), but she did not die, but she aged and they place a beautiful mask on her to cover her aging/decaying, and the cabin is long forgotten. And in legends speak of a princess of immaculate beauty, that only can be broken by a blood spell by a man, not of looks, but through love)... the guardian angel help the man know of her character and he falls in love with her even though she became a decaying person, but instantly vitality came back to her, and she later went to the ball of the witch princess... now queen, and saw how old she has become... and she was still young and beautiful... with her great grandson fell in love with her. The queen had went into a faint, and never woke up because she never been so afraid than that moment, for she forgotten the whole situation clearly due to memory loss. and she became queen of both kingdoms as the found princess and the new kingdom. And the young princess ask her guardian fairy what happen to the old queen, and the response was, she attempted murder and never felt remorse, and for that, I do not know the answer until judgement.)

Dionne Damietta

Selene Messalina (Selene is one of Cleopatra's grandkids name, Selene Cleopatra; not the original; Messalina is explain below)

Antonia Messalina

(Atonia is a daughter of Marc Anthony, boyfriend of the famous Cleopatra; Messalina comes from Valeria Messalina who was related to Claudius; who comes from Julius Caesar family; and that's another lover of Cleopatra; Messalina is also related to Emperor Nero who is related to Julius)

The bottom makes sense cause it can happen, it's all Cleopatra related.
