I'm saddened to announce the passing of Holly Thomas Boswell. They passed away last night at a hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. I do not yet know the time or cause of their death.
Holly was enormously influential in the early days of the trans community, forming Phoenix, one of the earliest if not the first trans support group with open membership, participating in the formation of the Southern Comfort Conference, founding in 1993 the trans spiritual retreat Kindred Spirits, and, perhaps most importantly, writing The Transgender Alternative, an article which was simultaneously published in my journal Chrysalis and IFGE's then-named TV-TS Tapestry and which did much to lead the forming trans community away from its then binary view of gender.
Holly was such a beautiful soul. RIP

This comes as a surprise to me. I met Holly in 1995. It was not the best of meetings, so I shall say no more about it here.

Thank you for posting those gorgeous sentiments.
This is an article written by Nancy Nangeroni telling how she came to design the trans symbol of the lavender triangle containing a circle with the Mars symbol to the upper right, the Venus symbol at the bottom and the combination of the two on the upper left done in bright blue. The original was sketched out by Holly in 1994 for another person who gave it to Nancy to design on the computer. Just another one of Holly's contributions to the community.

It seems a lifetime ago since we met last. I was taking my first baby-steps at SCC. You were such an inspiration to me.
Thank you for guiding me in my journey towards becoming the person I am now. Until we meet again.....

I am also saddened to learn of Holly's passing. I met them in 2006 and they kindly hosted me at their home as I attended a Phoenix Support Group meeting. They were kind, thoughtful, welcoming and nurturing as I took my first steps of transition. I also recall their fierce independence, strength and confidence in being exactly who they knew they were. They were really ahead of their time in recognizing and embracing non-binary gender expression. I was so naive back then I had no clue, but looking back now I have so much appreciation and admiration for them.
