Title: Ouchy. That was a mistake.
Post by: Denise on August 14, 2017, 04:52:41 PM
Just a note on something I wish I didn't do.

I take a shot (self administered) every Sunday.   I always use my left leg as my right is recovering from a severe muscle strain.

Last week I had some air in the shot.  A few days later I had a black-n-blue spot about 2 inches (5cm) around the injection spot and it was sore.  This weekend I avoided that spot and injected closer to the inner thigh.

OUCH.  24 hours later the new injection spot hurts.  Anyone have experience of 22g needles in the butt and self administered?

According to a nurse I know, stay away from inner and outer thighs. Use the muscle on the top of the thigh, and change the site each time. A small amount of air isn't a problem. In fact a tiny bit is called air locking and it helps prevent leakage of the injected fluid back out of the injection point.

Is there anyone who could give you the shot? When I first started I did them in my thighs but I got tired of the bruises and sore thighs. For me self injecting in the backside was like awkward. So my brother or my dad does it for me. I find it a lot easier to have someone else do it for me.

Hi Denise!

I've been using the ventrogluteal IM injection site for the last 7 months (2 mL volume every 10 days), without any pain or complications. There's a nice description here: https://thenursepath.blog/2016/12/12/how-to-give-ventrogluteal-injections/

Hope this helps!

Hugs, Sarah

I usually do it in my thigh.
Last time I did it a little bit higher up than usual and hit a nerve.
OMG it hurt!!! I almost passed out!
It took about a week for the pain to go away.

YES. Several years. I did them myself. It's a breeze, rarely any pain and even rarer, soreness and bruise that lasts several days. The fatty cushion helps.  ;D

You could have nicked a capillary or something, probably not a big deal but be careful it doesn't keep happening, you don't want to be getting any estradiol directly into your bloodstream. According to my doctor the chances of blood clotting skyrockets. I do sub-q injections in my stomach and one time I noticed some bruising starting after the injection, it was no big deal and I just sort of took note of what I did differently that time. Haven't had any issues since.

True but even if you did, it wouldn't be the end of the world, levels would peak as they do when one takes estradiol sublingually, probably to a higher level but still, when you consider that pregnant women have levels as high as 75,000 pg/ml. Anyways, that's how I see it and my doctor agrees with me.

QuoteAccording to my doctor the chances of blood clotting skyrockets.

Pregnancy levels up to 75,000 pg/ml. Risk of DVT: 0.1%, risk of pulmonary embolism: 0.01%. Skyrockets is an exaggeration.
