Title: An Unusual Story About a Driver's License
Post by: BeckyCNJ on August 17, 2017, 04:34:07 PM
When I introduced myself several months ago, I believe I mentioned that I had an ironic quirk of having my birth certificate with a typo listing me as female. This bc is from 1956 so it was filled in by a typewriter, not a computer.

Fast forward to today. I was due to update my driver's license. This was a year where I was required to visit the DMV and bring in all the material needed to prove who I was and where I lived and get a new photo. One of those documents was my birth certificate. I handed the paperwork to the clerk and she quickly reviewed it. As she was finishing I asked if the fact that my bc said "female" and my license showed "male" was a problem. She told me I had to get the bc fixed but it would be no problem.

I asked if the license could be amended to show "F." I look and sound completely male, but because my bc says female they had no problem making the change. I'm now the proud holder of a driver's license that shows me as female.

I never expected I would see this day and while nothing has changed physically, it was a wonderful feeling walking out of DMV with my new license.

This could potentially be a problem. The question is what do the records of your birth state say. If they also indicate female, then everything is good. If not, this could cause problems latter on and you will still need to revise the state records. It might be a good idea for you to order a duplicate copy of your birth certificate just to check what the state records show. If nothing else, the duplicate can be stored in a safe place should your copy be damaged or lost. When I updated my birth certificate, I ordered 4 copies and will be storing them separately so they won't be destroyed by the same action.

Nice mistake to have!  Mine is the other way: my driver's license has my female name but it shows an M.   >:(

I was living in Mississippi when I first tried to get my license. One of the officers there was so harsh, that he demanded I get my records changed back, so they could put Male and my dead name. Failure to do so would result in 20 years in prison. I contacted the ACLU, and had them bring the hammer down. That officer slammed the door to his office, where he stayed inside, when I got my first driver's license.
