Title: Working abroad in Europe for one year (Ireland)
Post by: 011011 on August 23, 2017, 03:47:23 PM
Hello - I'm a 28 year old FTM. I've been on testosterone for 8 years. I'm currently trying to get everything together so I can enter the program to work abroad in Ireland for one year. The US and Ireland have an agreement where US citizens that are currently in school or graduated within the past year can live and work in Ireland for an entire year. My one year graduation anniversary is in December so I must submit everything by then.

I'm worried about my testosterone prescription, though. I'm hoping I'll be going to Ireland with enough testosterone and needles/syringes, but if not, or if something happens, is it possible for a non-eu citizen to see a doctor and get a prescription? Does anyone have any idea what that would cost (roughly) out of pocket? I'll be going there with 2,500 in euro and $4,000 in my bank account. I'll be working. I have an accounting degree but since I'll be an immigrant and not a citizen, I'm sure I'll only get a retail or restaurant job. I'll either rent a room in a house or share an apartment.

It sucks because literally the only thing I'm apprehensive about is making sure I have enough testosterone for the duration of my stay and a little for when I return. I'll be quitting my current job to do this which means I will not have insurance when I get back. It all might sound a little crazy but I mentally and spiritually need a unique experience like this. Life is precious and short. I don't make a ton of money right now ($35,000) so it's not like I'll be leaving a lucrative career. Now is the best time for this.

If anyone has any information or similar experience, please let me know. I'll take all the advice I can get.

Hi and welcome to the site.

Really good questions. I will leave it to our members who have contacts. Thanks for hopping on and sharing your experience and plans. Maybe you could go to the Introductions category and tell us a little about yourself.

I am moving your topic into the Testosterone category.

I would just talk to your doctor here about your plans and see what they can do for you instead of worrying about getting a prescription abroad.

Out of pocket, a 10ml vial costs me around $25. 2 years worth of needles ran me another $20. I go through basically 2 vials a year. If you pay out of pocket, there are no insurance restrictions to deal with on how much you can get at once. Because T is a controlled substance there are federal rules about how much can be dispensed to you at a time, so I would just chat with your doctor and in the lead up to you going, I would work to get enough T on hand to last you through the year.

I like having excess medication around just in case. When I was seeing my doctor quarterly, I would just ask for a new prescription each time I went in. Never had any issues getting it filled.

And if that doesn't work out for whatever reason, is your doctor's office able to coordinate with a pharmacy who could mail it to you if they prescribed it? All you'd need to include in the package is a copy of your prescription and it should make it through customs without issue.

Yes I'm planning on seeing my doctor in October or November to talk to him about it. I would prefer to go to Ireland with everything. My current 10 ml vile has about half left and it expires sep 2018. I can't bring that one because it has to be in the box it came in with my name a prescription on it. I need a new prescription but then I'll probably need a refill, as well.

Have made some enquires. There is a prescription your doctor can give you called a cross-border prescription to use in the Eu but after speaking to chemists here a problem can be where a brand of drug is not used within the Eu so an alternative may be offered ? And also the amount they can despence might be different....hope you have a great time working here and have an amazing experience
