Title: Will my singing voice be affected?
Post by: GraysonIsVeryConfused on September 02, 2017, 01:36:23 PM
I know my voice will get deeper but will it effect my range, ability to keep tone? Stuff like that. I'm really worried about it but I feel like T will really help my body dysphoria. I'm just not sure.

It's impossible to say how your voice will be affected. There are a few males who retain a 4 active range allowing them to sing both male and female parts. Normally you would lose upper range and be able to work the lower range far better. In my case, I hit the bottom of the barrel and even my head voice was only 130 HZ with a top end of about 180 HZ. You might want to look at this (http://www.nyspeechandvoicelab.net/transgender/voice-masculinization/) as it will show you what's possible.

I guess it affects everyone differently, but for a while your voice will be unstable... eventually it will even out and strengthen.

You will still be able to sing, but obviously your voice will change and it will be quite unstable initially.

Here are some interesting examples of FTM singers:

Romeo is a singer and he tracks his singing voice during his transition:

And here is a graphical view of my voice change since July. As you can see its very variable but it's deepening continuously.

I'm not not a vocalist by any stretch of the imagination (I'm happy I can sing in tune!), but I DO like to sing along with songs in the car and whatnot.

After 9 months on T, my voice was alto, but its changing into a baritone.  Because its still changing, there are certain notes I can no longer hit in my register (I'm repeating what my musically-inclined partner is telling me to say, I have no idea what all of this means. [emoji37])  He also says that "once I get used to hitting them in my new range, I'll be able to sing them again."

From what I've read, it takes on average, 2 to 3 years for your voice to get to its permenant range and smooth out.

Hope this helps!
