Title: Finastride before Surgery
Post by: Jandy on September 20, 2017, 10:28:50 AM
Hey Everyone,

I am stopping my HRT patches as of September 25th which is two weeks prior to my FFS (This has been advised by my surgeon), I am also taking a daily pill of Finastride. I wondered if I should stop this at the same time as my HRT, I have asked my doctor who told me to consult the surgeon , and the surgeon said he only has concerns with the HRT and taking the Finastride is still ok.

Does anyone have any more advice on this ?

Thanks x

The reason for stopping HRT is to reduce the risk of blood clots. As secondary consideration would be drugs like Spiro make it more difficult to maintain you during surgery. If a drugs doesn't affect either of these issues, it should be safe to continue however your surgeon always has the final call.

Studies have concluded that patches containing bio-identical estradiol do NOT increase the risk of DVT (can even reduce) and mimic the way in which ciswomen get their estrogen so if ciswomen aren't told they should get rid of their ovaries before a surgery or suspend endogenous production, the same should theoretically apply to us. It's unfortunate some surgeons are unaware of this and don't stop and think about risks vs benefits more thoroughly.

As always, follow recommendations but you could discuss this with the surgeon, see what they say.
