Title: Scar reduction after GCS
Post by: Anne Blake on October 02, 2017, 02:31:11 PM
I am about 3 weeks post surgery. My surgeon told me to use an antibiotic ointment for the first two weeks and then an aloe vera gel for two weeks and then go to some sort of silicone scar treatment after that. Have any of you had experience with silicone treatments for scars and if so, what did you use and how well did it work?

I havent had gcs but have used it for other scars. It did help but takes time. It works better on newer scars.

The surgeons at NYU in NYC have continually pressed me to be "gently massaging" stitched areas from the first week on to keep scar tissue from developing and hardening. . . . . .I'm in week 6

If you want information on silicon scar treatment, you need to rummage around in the FTM top surgery area of the forum. Because top surgery pretty much leave a cut from one side of the chest to the other, they use everything possible to reduce the visibility of the scar. It appears that the silicon treatments work better than many of the other treatments like vitamin E and the silicon gel might be better than than the strips however there have been good results with the strips.

I use the scar strips and they seem to be doing a good job. I get a box from Walgreen's and use two sets, one to wash and one to wear.

I used the silicon gel on my scaring from my tummy tuck. I can't comment if it made a difference,  but there is plenty of medical evidence to support its use.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice, I plan to start the silicone treatment soon. Now my problem is to deal with what appears to be some granulation in a few small spots. I was hoping to avoid doctors for a while but that appears to be changing.

Thanks again,
Anne
