Title: Smoking & Surgery
Post by: Whatagirlwants on October 06, 2017, 11:34:00 PM
Hello!

Long term forum viewer/first time poster.

So... I have FFS scheduled for Wednesday this week (exciting but scary!) I'm 24 and overall a healthy person that is not overweight.

However , I feel like such a fool!, I went out last night (Friday) and had a heavy night with alcohol whilst I'm not worried about he alcohol (I won't be drinking anything else alcoholic for a while!) I gave up smoking around 4/5 weeks ago .... but last night .... I feel so dumb .... I was drunk
(No excuse) and I had a puff on a cigarette , I didn't even have a full one but I just have had 3-5 inhales Of it ....

I feel stupid and like I've messed everything up .... I've done lots of research and don't think it should affect things but I wanted to know your thoughts ?

Welcome to Susan's Place. One hit isn't going to cause any harm however constant smoking is bad for the skin and voice. The primary danger is that smoking is very addictive and anything that triggers the desire could cause you to return to smoking. Some people give up going to bars because that can trigger them to smoke.

Congratulations on quitting and I hope you are able to avoid smoking in the future.

I would be more concerned about the alcohol before surgery. Alcohol does interact with anesthesia to cause over sedation, which is not good. On the plus side, just stop all alcohol drinking 24 hours before surgery and it will be out of your blood system.

For the smoking part, 3 or 4 puffs will not cause any problems. The problems are caused by long term smoking and having high levels of nicotine and carbon monoxide in your blood system. Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the blood and the nicotine is associated with blood clots. These are serious complications, but in a few days they should be out of your blood system.

We all want to be attractive, but smoking and drinking will age you faster than anything else except for unprotected heavy sun exposure. Just take a look at a non-smoker at age 60 compared to a smoker.

I can't see any reason to freak out over a few puffs on a cig. It's not like you are doing 1-2 packs a day. Or, is going back to doing 1-2 packs a day after falling off the tobacco wagon is what is really eating away at you?

Hi Chloe!

I agree with everyone- a few puffs won't do you in.  Just keep in mind- nicotine is an extremely addictive substance.  I remember hearing somewhere that it's more addictive than heroin.  Don't let your brain say things to you like "a few puffs are okay so a whole cigarette won't kill me either."  That sort of thinking leads to real trouble.  Congratulations on quitting, though.  I've been there!

Oh, and best luck on your surgery.

Shannon

Thanks everyone for your responses :)

I'm not even slightly tempted to start smoking again, I don't think I even enjoyed the few puffs that I did have!

It was just a drunken mistake that made me freak out a bit and made me think that I had messed up everything.

After reading your comments , it has made me feel so much better xx

Nicotine is a vaso restrictor as well as caffeine. So avoid caffeine for 3 weeks after surgery too. This included chocolate    :( too.
