Title: Creepy games for the Halloween season?
Post by: Custard Squirrel on October 22, 2017, 05:50:09 AM
Well, it is the season, and I was just thinking I should get into a nice creepy and/or moody game before the month is over. Anybody have any personal favorites they want to share?

Of the ones I've played so far, my favorites are;

The 'Souls' games. They're not horror, really, but they're so good at creating their distinct, moody atmosphere. 'Bloodborne' might have them beat, though. Lovecraft inspired horror in games is usually a big turn-off for me, but it was just so well done that it gave me a fresh new appreciation for what you could do with it.

Of course you can't mention horror games without 'Resident Evil'. All the ones that came before 4 will always be classics to me, but the Gamecube remake is on another level. Those fixed camera angle pre-rendered backgrounds are still beautiful a decade and a half later, and they still ooze atmosphere-- Especially when paired with the game's fantastic soundtrack. There's something about the way it mixes familiarity and uncertainty to make an unsettling tension that I can't get enough of. It might be my favorite horror game.

Well, you also can't mention 'Resident Evil' without bringing up 'Silent Hill'. I think it's pretty uncontroversial to say #2 is the best in the series. The imagery in 'Silent Hill 2' is just so evocative, and it all really gets in your head. The more you think about it, the creepier and more messed up it is. SH 2 is tied for my favorite... Too hard to choose!

'P.T.' isn't exactly a game, it's technically just a demo, but walking through that hallway is still freakier than 99% of all full games out there, so I'm counting it. I actually had trouble finishing this one.

'Soma' is one of the more recent (relatively speaking) ones I've really liked. It rarely, if ever, really catches you by surprise, but it still does a very good job of telling its story and building a surreal and spooky world. What a downer, though!

'Detention' is a newer indie title that doesn't get nearly enough attention for how good it is. It feels very 'Silent Hill 2' inspired in all the right ways, but that doesn't mean it doesn't do its own thing and find its own voice. It's got a very interesting historical and political angle as well.

I'm not sure if it fits the list, but 'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask' overwhelmingly feels like an "October game", if that makes sense. It has a sort of Ray Bradbury-like feeling to it; kind of nostalgic, melancholy, lonely, and creepy at times, despite having a kid friendly and cheery side.

I'm probably leaving something out of my list, but that's just what happens  :P
