Title: Name change in aus
Post by: Siobhan Amanda on November 19, 2017, 06:07:31 PM
I've booked up an appointment to change my name legally..bit excited about that 😊. It doesn't seem too hard providing you pay them for the time. Another thing  I must admit to being excited about is that they'll only let you change it once in twelve months so I'll get to own it for a year at least😀. I imagine all the rest of my life that will need changing after won't be as simple so if anyone has any " if I'd have known that before " advice,  please let this excited girl know.

Hi from a fellow Aussie in Sydney. Congratulations on the name change. It must be very exciting for you. Sounds like a good reason to celebrate.

I can't offer you any of the other advice you request. I'm not as far along as you. I am about 2.5 months on HRT and about 50 hours electrolysis, but still present and live as a male full time.

Hi Jayne, hi from the Sunshine Coast, thanks for that ! Electrolisis bloody hurts doesn't it😳 I guess I'm not that much ahead , almost 1.5 months and still presenting male atm but figured I'd have a while to change the rest of the stuff( probably takes ages).

I am quite lucky that I have a pretty high pain tolerance, except for when she zaps my upper lip. That always brings tears to my eyes. But as for the rest of my face, I somehow manage to zone out, I have even fallen asleep while being electrocuted.

I thought you were much further ahead when I looked at your profile picture. If that is you, you already look very feminine.

I've also sent you a PM.

Hi Hon,

I'm in Adelaide. As ever everything in Aus varies from state to state. SA is very straight forward if you are an Australian citizen, basically fill in an online form pay the fee and it is in the mail.

Google 'name change in Queensland' will give you the details.

Things to think about. You really don't want to change your name more than once if you can avoid it as all the other documents that need to be changed are a pain. Bank accounts, credit cards, driving licence, medicare, work, ATO, Passport, phone, internet, you name it and it needs a notification, otherwise your dead name comes back and of course your dead name is no longer legal so for example you cannot cash a cheque sent to your dead name etc.

Choose a name you would like to hear shouted out across a waiting room. If you are really fixed on  'Princess Unicorn Bambi' fine but it may sound pretty dumb when shouted out across the medics waiting room and raises the eyebrow of even a tolerant police person!

Choose a name appropriate to your age. Google popular names in the year you were born. You again may look a little odd if you choose a name that is in fashion for babies at the moment and it didn't exist when you were born.

Practice a signature and how easy is it to for others to spell. eg Cindy, Cindi, Cyndy, Sindy, Sindi, Syndy, all sound the same.

Also, and I know this sounds daft. Choose a name that you like and that means something to you. It is a rare chance to choose your own name.

Oh and if you are a professional it may be useful to keep initials that can link your professional record back to modern you. For example I have many scientific publications and grants and it is useful for them to be listed in my professional record for verification reasons.

Hi Cindy, thanks for that info 😀, yes I decided on a name that meant something to me. Does that mean I won't be able to use my cards after the change? I was kind of hoping that I could start changing the old things a bit at a time and everything new as me.

The quicker you get things changed over, the less potential there is for issues. I went with the following order:
1) Bank
2) Federal Government Agencies - Medicare, ATO, etc
3) Employer
4) Super fund(s)
5) Licence/Car Rego/other state issued stuff
6) Everything else - library cards, gym memberships etc etc
