Title: Poll: Celebrities/gender role models you identify with?
Post by: PurpleWolf on November 19, 2017, 11:21:34 PM

Do you have any "gender role models", celebrities or fictional characters or whatever that you identify with? Those you immediately think "that's me" or "I wanna be like that!" when you see them?

Hope many people will chime in, ;)!

Two of mine: Jared Leto & Johnny Depp

I think La Roux is one. Amazing musician. Read an article how she felt when younger she wanted to transition to male but then discovered that nb is an option and decided that fit her better

Sam Smith sort off. There was an interview written I think in the Idependant where he mentioned he feels both male and female. But haven't heard of anything about it apart from that. Hope its not just going to get forgotten about  :P

Freddie Mercury and David Bowie definitely. They had a don't care what other people think attitude. I aspire to have that sort of confidence

Masculine personality traits. Extremes of exercise/ male body pre transition.
Date / marry very attractive women. Withhold information. Children lots of em.

Come out And not exactly the most feminine trans woman but authentic none the less.
Caitlyn!

I have to admit relate to her. Mixed feelings.

Ellie Kemper because we (somewhat) have the same jaw structure. The longer im on hormones I hope I can be as petite as she is too. And of course I like the character Kimmy she plays lol

It's funny because being trans feels like being trapped in an underground bunker. [emoji17] until we finally get out

Isabella Bennett from steam powered giraffe. She transitioned in the spotlight. They're not super famous but did get a bit of youtube fame before she started transitioning. They have a couple transition related songs too. Overall a really great band and the upside is now you can tell the Bennett's apart because two of the members are identical twins.

I greatly admire the courage of everyone who is a well known public figure and still felt the need to transition.

No matter what their personal or political views are, they are to be admired.

I do have a role model: the trans scientist who delivered a fascinating talk at a convention I attended a couple of years ago.  I won't mention her name because I don't know if she cares to be outed on a public forum such as this.

Her professionalism and competence cut through all perceptions of gender and made me realize that being trans didn't have to be freaky.  Her acceptance among the other convention attendees made me realize that transition didn't have to be as scary as I feared it would be.

Scratch that. Though I admire her transition and how pretty she is, I'm also disappointed at some of her latest social media content so I wouldn't consider her a role model.

No. I can't think of any celebrities I particularly admire. I've never thought " oh that's me" about a celbrity. I certainly don't have a physical resemblance to any celebrities. Not real people anyway. I was told I look like an alien character named Stahma Tar by some ->-bleeped-<- at a trans support group.  I do admire many of the people here though. Some of you have been through a lot and managed to survive it.

I don't wholly admire any famous person perhaps mostly because I don't know any personally, but I do make use of them in a "role model" way. When I first started trying to understand women's fashion it occurred to me that wealthy celebrities just hire expensive stylists to choose their clothes, hairstyles and makeup fashions. So why not pick a celeb or two whose look I like and adapt their style to an extent?

That's what I've done and I regularly check the fashion pages for my celeb role models' latest street looks. I save pics to a folder on my computer and refer to that before I shop for clothes. I don't buy the designer labels they're wearing, but I find it's easy enough to find low cost alternatives to most designer fashions if you search a bit.

I don't say which celebs I follow, though, so as to not be seen as a second rate version of someone else. Ha! Actually, when you do this you always end up creating your own look, just using the celeb style as a starting point.

Well there are certain actors I admire, since I'm into that particular craft myself, and there are certain gay and lesbian actors which it's nice to see doing well. Trans actors are pretty rare. I can't say I use actors as role models necessarily, but they can often give good life advice since they get around and they meet a lot of people and often deal with things like addiction, depression and social pressure.

I've never really looked at someone and thought they were just like me, although there are some people who have uncanny amounts of similar experiences to me. I just try to take useful anecdotes and info from them and make use of it.

PurpleWolf,

You have a knack for asking questions that crawl under my skin.

There is such a person -- a fictional character with whom I identify more closely than I can say. She is the me I would have been, had I been who I was supposed to be. When I look at her picture, it's like looking into a mirror. That is not hyperbole; it's the literal truth. And that could be kind of scary, I suppose, under other circumstances. I had my first experience of gender euphoria, imagining myself as her. It was an incredible experience.

Nah, just kidding! I don't have any kind of 'idol' or 'role model' gender or otherwise. I was never that type of guy who oriented himself on others at all. I strive to be my authentic self and to find my own purpose and happiness.

Not to mention that I don't give a flying f++k about celebrities or famous people at all, they've never even remotely interested me, hence I know as good as nothing about them, not even their real names for the most part.

That doesn't mean that I can't see or acknowledge similarities between myself and a fictional character or other men I meet and talk to though, I do recognise similarities and when I have something in common with someone. But that has nothing to do with 'role models' or wanting to be like any of them, similarities are just a plus that help one to bond with each other better in my opinion.

Jared Leto and Johnny Depp are amazing! Jared Leto is s in a band called 30 seconds. To Mars, he recently released a song called "Walk on water" which is basically a protest to the current political administration, if you listen to the lyrics it's about how some people are fighting for the wrong things and we should fight for our social movements, at least that's what I've gotten out of it.

As for me, I like Billie Joe Armstrong (Green day), ,he's a good guy. He's bisexual himself and generally supports the LGBT movement. I also want to rock guyliner like he does, lol.

Laura Jane Grace is another good one, I've raved about her before but she's a trans woman in the punk band "Against me!, from interviews she seems very sweet and down to earth, she's also incredibly strong and a wonderful mother. I feel like she's still got a long way to go so I feel for her, but the entirety of her music speaks volumes in her struggle to be punk and push her way through tough things.

None of these people I identify with or feel similar to, though. I just like them a lot. I tend to identify with book or cartoon characters, in my case the big "oh" moment for me knowing I was a guy was seeing female-turned-male characters, in my case it was Natani from the serial webcomic two kinds and Haruhi from the anime Ouran High School Host Club

I felt the same way about a trans scientist I encountered some years ago.
When I worked in science I always felt that my gender non-conformity (and my gender itself) were non-issues to my peers... which let me chug along without being consumed by the need to transition. I like to think that my peers would be just as accepting of my transition.

This is easy for me.  Kaylee Frye from Firefly/Serenity.  She is an excellent intuitive mechanic all self taught.  Is super cute even when being a grease monkey.  Plus she's always positive,  magnetic and bubbly.  I so want to be her.

The one actor who I really look up to is Robin De Jesús. I wouldn't say that I've ever felt like I want to be him, but he's definitely a role model for me. He's not a trans man, but he's gay. Listening to him talk about when he began to really accept himself helped me with my own transition, and coming to terms with my sexuality. He was also in a play that was exactly what I needed to see at that time in my life. I actually met him last year, and that was one of the happiest non-transition related moments of my life. I decided that I want my middle name to be Robin because of him.

While I don't really idolise any celebrity, or non-famous person for that matter, there are some that I take inspiration from for various reasons. I do want to look unique in my own way, but some I think are good sources for inspiration, that makes me think "I wanna be somewhat like that, but in my own way":

Jason Momoa (actor, from Game of Thrones) - cause I think that's the only celebrity so far that I've known about who has that kind of rough/wild, masculine "viking" look that I want to achieve in some form or another. That's the kind of masculinity I want to embody, and not really the mainstream kind.

And also to some degree or another:
Mads Mikkelsen
Buck Angel
Aydian Dowling

Yeah, I really need to get started with exercising...!

Ha, I'm really more the eyeliner/anime guy/androgynous rocker type myself!!!

I never idolize anyone either. But when I see someone who has the same style as me, I really feel strongly that yeah, I wanna achieve that/be like that myself! etc. Especially since I'm pre-T.... and don't quite look the part yet,  ;).

Yeah, I think face and style wise I might look a little like Jason! :)

But Mads is so cool! I really like his kinda "dark" and silent vibes and think he's handsome too. I've had celebrity crushes on him in the past too! But you really don't have to agree with me ;)

I've started liking Buck more lately, cause I've listen more to his talks/streams online and his message has started getting through to me. But looks-wise I mostly just admire his physique and tattoos.

Your type for inspiration sounds a lot like how I was back in my early 20's, so I do understand you! It's a nice look but I've changed a bit over time.

I get that, and I like finding someone I can identify with as well, but I change style and ideals so often, so I rarely ever do find any such. And then if I do, I don't stick with them very long.

I admire anyone with the courage to be venerable and their authentic self.  Individuals in this group and individuals like Amanda Simpson, Marci Bower or Maggie Stumpp who found the courage to do it, while in very public roles.

I have a couple:

I have admired Catherine Zeta Jones and love her beauty and sense of old Hollywood style.  She also has fought demons in her mental health struggles.  She is a great actress, singer and dancer too.

RuePaul was my early role models with his "I don't give a damn" aura.

Frida Kahlo-her art, beauty and suffering (like her I have spinal issues).  Plus she is a woman of color.

Michelle Obama.  I wish I had her polish and ability to take the high road.

Laverne Coxs for the same reasons as Michelle.

I don't find him handsome at all  :D! If anything I find him creepy xD. But then I'm not gay either so  ;D. If I find guys attractive they must be very feminine!!! Or at least not traditionally masculine. (Like that Buck Angel etc. is a total turn-off lol. Not to mention that Magnus Samuelsson xD.)

Bari Jo, Kaylee is awesome! (Or should I say, shiny!) Fantastic character. (I love  Firefly)

I have so many people I admire or respect or think are gorgeous etc all in different ways.

In terms of my own overall expression... no idea what he's like as a person, but Eddie Redmayne and some of the characters he's played (or way he's played them) probably resonates with me quite a lot. Plus the freckles :) A very beautiful man.

I always appreciated Bacall, but never saw a Deneuve film until recent years. I've become quite a fan, though. Her talent and sexy style is endlessly enviable, for sure. Even in more recent films she looks great.

I'm gonna copy Elis and say Bowie. Not necessarily androgynous like he was famous for playing with, I'd like to be identified as a woman for sure, but to be as cool and comfortable with oneself as The Thin White Duke.
My tg role model is definitely Charlie from the Girl For All Seasons YouTube channel.
