I totally LOVE them. My boyfriend likes them too. I like them on my pizza but when I order pizza I have to get them on the side and then put them on my slice of pizza. My dad and brother would touch pizza with anchovies.  Lol

Anchovies are only good on pizza if it is a pizza with everything else on it too with extra cheese and extra mushrooms.  Yum!

Toppings are for heathens. It's like using crayons to draw a moustache on the Mona Lisa. Learn to appreciate pizza for what it is. And start spelling Devyl right!  >:-)

Almost on topic... We keep having fights with our local pizza place. They add cinnamon and almonds to Hawaii Pizza. Not acceptable. We made them re-do the pizza a few times.

Anchovies? Yes!
Mushrooms? Yes!

Maybe with some T and Minoxidil, Mona could get herself a real moustache.

You can have your English boiled pizza with fish, and your Australian Drop Bear Droppings pie. New York is the place where pizza standards are set, and I have New Yorkers in the neighborhood to make pie for me.

Deep dish is the best. I don't even like thin crust pizza. My grandma makes pizza a lot. Since I totally love radishes she put radish slices on a pizza she made. That was sweet...but NO,NO! Roasted radishes are not good!

So do I. The first time I encountered a pizza with pineapple I thought it would be nasty. But it's actually really good. The pineapple goes very well with the cheese and other toppings.

Thinking about this ,The base is without doubt the most important thing with pizza. Make a good base, maybe sourdough, long fermentation or whatever, if it's good it'll be good with just salt, olive oil and rosemary or a small amount of blended fresh tomatoes. I'd keep the anchovies on the side or for next days breakie...However if the base is one of those ghostly white pin pricked things from the frozen section of our corner shop I'd be burying it in everything I had in the cupboard and possibly the fridge too.

I do love anchovies on pizza now and again.  I especially love them in Caesar salads.

That said, I had one of those "I need everything super salty because spiro" moments and ordered a breakfast pizza with anchovies.  It was amazing.

Chicago style with marinara sauce, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and extra cheese. This is the ONLY great pizza.

Anchovies, pineapple, thin cracker crusts, and any sauce other than a marinara sauce DOES NOT BELONG ON  PIZZA!   I have spoken.

This thread inspired me

So I invited a friend over and made a pizza New York style thin crust with Canadian bacon, Italian dry salami, pineapple, mushrooms, onions, olives, Gorgonzola cheese, Feta cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan, Romano and Asiago cheeses

Yes, a bit of heaven in every bite and I'm pretty sure I could hear it saying "Eat me"

But sorry, no anchovies

Julia, I don't believe that you and I could ever share a pizza.

Those are two things I would never put on a pizza.

BBQ chicken and pulled pork are
Pretty  decent toppings, for a couple slices at least.

There used to be a pizza place in Sisters Oregon that made the absolute best pizza in Oregon. Whenever I could I would order a large and a small pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and extra cheese to go. They did not deliver but even if they did I doubt they would deliver to my home over 150 miles away. I would eat the small one on my way home and have more of the large one after getting home. It was soooooo good. They put herbs in the crust and used lots of the best pepperoni I have ever tasted. Everything was great about their pizzas and calzones.

Quality is what matters!

Terrible anchovies (any you get a fast food pizza place) make terrible pizza. Good anchovies (white usually) with the proper seasonings, great pizza. Has to be on a crispy, thin crust though. Something about thicker crust or even brooklyn style "floppy" thin just doesn't work with anchovies for me. Overall though, definitely better for a Caeser.

Re: Mushrooms. Mushrooms are a classic topping, and one of the greatest foods of all time, how dare people denigrate their good name! ;D But, again, it's quality. Random canned mushrooms or low end white mushrooms, meh at best, bordering on outright gross. Some nice portobella or shiitake mushrooms, soooooooo good. Have to get a proper sear on them in a good brick oven or under a broiler though, you don't want them soggy. Goes particularly well with a good pepperoni. Alternatively, sautee them first and get some of the moisture out.

Hawaiian pizza is a monstrosity. Pineapple should not be served hot, ever. Even grilled pineapple should be allowed to cool.

Crust depends on the toppings. Brooklyn is the best all purpose. Not a fan of the chicago style deep dish, it's just a wannabe pot pie, but works with some toppings/fillings like spinach and feta.

BBQ on pizza I don't care for. I've had decent BBQ chicken pizzas, but they might as well have been any random sandwich. Waste of pizza calories.

My perfect pizza is simple: Brooklyn style crust with a classic red sauce, Mozz + Prov + Cheddar blend, tons of pepperoni, and extremely finely ground beef (EXTREMELY finely ground) placed on top of the pepperonis so that as the oil from the pepperoni cooks out it fries the beef, with some roasted garlic for extra kick. Top with red pepper flakes and the fakest, cheapest, grated parm there is.

One of my mom's friends is Italian.  She had said a couple of times that she was going to make us a real pizza and one day she brought us a pizza. The crust was all thin and all it had on it was cheese and some kind of greens. And that was ALL. Nothing else! And the cheese wasnt even all over the pizza. It looked like she just put pieces of random cheese on it. Stingy with the toppings much?  I started talking about that sad half assed pizza at work and someone told me that's authentic Italian pizza. Pizza with no toppings and stingy amounts of cheese? Totally sad!

Sounds like a Margherita pizza. Popular around here, but I don't care for them. Fresh mozz is really good, but I prefer the full coverage with it rather than the individual blobs.

"Authentic" pizza is largely a myth. There are countless varieties of pizza in Italy, and every random person claims the version they prefer is the original. Typically though, you will see the fresh mozz and really charred outer edges on the crusts (actual thickness varies, though to some people at a certain point you are just making Foccacia with toppings).

Arguably, Americanized pizza has just as robust of a history, if not more so, since pizza doesn't carry quite the weight in traditional Italian cuisine that it does here. (I would compare "American" pizza to Cajun cuisine, which is really just French recipes adjusted for new ingredients in a new world that evolved over time. And Cajun is certainly considered perfectly legitimate, so no reason not to consider "Italian American" to be anything but. Not to mention the Italians ripped off the Chinese for most of their stuff to begin with, so if we were to question Americanized versions of things the entire Italian staple lineup gets thrown out along with it by the same logic. ;D)

No sliced black olives? :'(

That's my sister's go to, but I am weird about olives. I don't dislike the taste, but... I can't eat them. I always associate them with the usual pimento stuffed green olives, and they creep me out. They look like sickly, blood shot eyeballs in a jar, and they have bothered me since I was a little kid. One of those things I've never been able to let go. ;D

My understand is the original Pizza was a bread crust with leftovers on it. After that it evolved into something not intended to get rid of leftovers. Remember is tomatoes are not a part of original italian cooking. Tomatoes are a new world plant and for a long time they were considered to be poisons. Pizza would have started out as a simple dish, possibly a crust with cheese and a few herbs sprinkled on the top for flavor. It took Americans to really go overboard on the toppings.

It had to do with the red color. Several plants that are poison also have red fruit and for a while europeans feared the plant as it's a member of the nightshade family. This didn't stop others from eating it but it couldn't be used in the old world until the new world was discovered.

Sardine fan here, never seen mustard ones. I usually have tomato sauce sardines on toast

Ah, the sardines in mustard are quite tasty if you can find any

Anchovies for sure. They are hard to get around here. Sometimes they just stick a can anchovies in the takeout box.

Ooooh I LOVE anchovies on my pizza! I also love mushrooms, pepperoni, olives and sometimes artichoke as well.

All at once if I can!

I am not a big fan of pizza, but I like dried anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), which is popular here in S. Korea. We have different nouns for anchovy depending on their size. While drinking red wine, I sometimes eat dried small anchovy with spicy sauce. I occasionally eat anchovy sashimi with spicy sauce and pepper.

BTW, I used to love Italian white pizza.

White pizza is awesome! Not too many places make a good one, though.

Yes! Yes!

But if that's not your thing, you might like this off the menu at a local spot called EZ Pie:

"The Mayflower Pie                                                                            $13.00+

Marinated turkey tips, gravy, stuffing and sweet corn with a cranberry sauce drizzle."

Naturally, it's smothered in cheese. I thought it was going to be gross, but it's really good, and very filling.

No thank you.

I am in the "no anchovie" crowd though they maybe okay on the side.
The Bestest Pizza is pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and extra cheese on a homemade crust of any thickness or style (EXCEPT one of those thin (ie cracker crusts)) with a good marinara or seasoned crushed tomato  sauce.
None of those gore-mette yuppie designer works of art things that are unfit to be called a pizza.
