I'm Lauren,70 years old,and a transwoman. I've read that Medicare will help with HRT and SRS,but that very few doctors will take Medicare. My dream is to have SRS,but worry that I'm too old and that there is a very painfull and long recovery from SRS.
Any help is appreciated,Lauren

I too had surgery while eligible for Medicare. I had to pay most of the costs out of pocket. Medicare may pay for the hospital but not the surgeon. Always make sure you are pre-approved for surgery before you schedule surgery.
Hello Lauren, welcome to Susan's!
If you haven't already, I recommend check out the GCS Forum (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/board,50.0.html) - we have several people who have had GCS in your age range. (In my opinion you are young). And within GCS there are several types of surgery, including one that is less invasive - I am not familiar with the medical term, it is cosmetically identical but does not include a cavity for the vagina, for simpler recovery and maintenance. Nice to have options.
But most important, welcome - I am glad you're here!

The cases I have heard of it covered had to do with the ones with Medicare advantage programs. Even then they had to go to certain places like University Hospitals to get the surgery in order for Medicare to cover it too. Hugs

Hi Lauren,
Welcome, I would suggest looking into Dr. Bowers she is great and works really hard with all types of insurance and she even lists that she will take Medicare but you will need to speak with her team on what is covered. Hope this helps :D
Hi Lauren,
Welcome to Susan's. I have heard of some folks able to get Medicare coverage for SRS at a couple of university hospitals with staff trying to learn the procedures but most surgeons do not accept Medicare. I checked out several of the top surgeons and they would not accept it. As for age and SRS, the doctors are more concerned about your fitness and health than age. I had a cosmetic or shallow SRS from Dr. Ley four months ago. I will be turning seventy next month. No problems. As for recovery, it is major surgery and I didn't bounce back very quickly but am getting stronger each day. Good luck in your pursuit of your dreams.
