Title: Sore throat on T?
Post by: The Flying Lemur on January 31, 2018, 11:35:41 AM
So I've heard that when you're early on T your throat can start to hurt as your vocal cords thicken and lengthen.  I always kind of thought that meant a scratchy throat or something.  Right now my throat is KILLING me--Tylenol every 4 hours and endless lozenges, etc.  I was thinking I might be coming down with strep, but my sister looked down my throat and said it wasn't even red.  I have no fever, no other symptoms.

Anybody know if this could be an effect of the T?  I've been on it about 3 weeks.

it could be; from what i hear, some people get it worse than others.  i've had plenty of sore throats but i've also been sick constantly for the past 2 months...  if it persists, i'd have a doctor look at it just to be sure.

Sounds like you got an actual cold. Not heard anyone on T complain of severe pain. I had none at all.

I had an on-and-off sore throat the first month or two, and some days the pain was pretty bad, but i could tell it wasn't strep or me getting sick (it was a different kind of pain.) It isn't uncommon and severity varies by person. I've also heard it can happen randomly throughout the first year as your chords settle.

If it persists, or there are any other symptoms, it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to your doc about it. Rule out it being strep (don't have to have the white spots or even redness to have strep - i used to get it all the time without those, and occasionally without fever) or flu. If the doc says it's just the chords changing then at least you'll know!

Maybe it wasn't affecting me because I don't do a lot of talking. In any case if it's the vocal cords that are inflamed I hear the best thing is not to use your voice much until they settle down. And use meds that you might use if you have regular laryngitis, although most over counter meds don't actually do anything to the throat except numb it.

Might be best to check with the doc first in case it is laryngitis. I had it about a year before my T for the first time and it was no joke

I ended up coming down with a nasty cold.  Ugh.  Hopefully, the T is still accomplishing something . . . somewhere . . .

I haven't really had a sore throat. In the first couple of days after I started, it felt a bit harder to swallow and that I needed to clear my throat. But that's been it. My voice has lowered a little.

This can totally happen. I've got a friend back west that had terrible throat pain as soon as he hit 7 months on T, no doctor could figure out what was wrong but it all went away after about a month of non-stop tea and honey concoctions. So, he had a month of discomfort. Not great, but his voice dropped hardcore during that timeframe too so...silver lining? However, like others have said, it's that time of year where people just get sick with colds/flu/strep-throat so definitely rule that out first.
