Title: What kind of superbowl food do you make?
Post by: Julia1996 on January 31, 2018, 03:27:15 PM
Hi everyone. So it's that time of year when guys act more boneheaded than usual, the stupid superbowl. My dad and brother invite their friends so we end up with a lot of guys coming to watch the stupid thing.  I don't know why but guys seem incapable of watching football without snacks. Here's what I made last year.

Deviled eggs.
Philly cheese steak egg rolls.
Wings, both hot and plain.
A ton of nachos.
Chocolate dipped bacon slices.
A crapload of cupcakes. Well I bought the cupcakes they weren't homemade.  Yeah I know, but I made everything else from scratch so I cheated with storebought cupcakes. I also made a very nice vegetable tray but that wasn't even touched. The chocolate dipped bacon was scarfed up quickly though.

I'm hoping to get some new ideas so please share some of the stuff you make.

Bacon... dipped in chocolate...

*says a silent prayer*

Why... just... why...

You should try deep fried chocolate bars, lol. I hear people like them.

I find the very idea utterly nauseating but you never know.

One of the things I most like to make is something I used get at the little restaurant in Los Nietos, CA The Green Burrito. No not the Carls crap.  But this is delish and easy.

Special Quesadilla
Pack of large flour tortillas, Warm the tortilla on a flat iron. Top with cheese, (I like sharp Cheddar) wait for it to melt and set aside. Now take a couple slices of Pastrami (no limit) and put that on the flat top to warm up. Then put the pastrami on the tortilla. Add lettuce and tomato. Drench in thinned out Guacamole. Fold and serve. Oh my goodness it's sooo good.
I'll be in LA this weekend and maybe I'll see if the restaurant still survives. Otherwise since I will be in the area I'll go to Chris and Pitts bar b que for some more nostalgia. Also looking forward to Steer and Stein, In-n-Out burger, The Hat, and Farmer Bros. and Tommy's. I got to play catch up because Seattle food sucks. I mean when Dicks burger is all you have to brag about you don't have much to brag about. I don't care if Bill Gates and his Dad did eat there.

Cheese steak egg rolls sounds AWESOME  :o  Seriously I need to make that

For me I'll be making cheese dip, fresh salsa, mini sandwiches of some sort, and deviled eggs.  This is mostly to go along with the stereotypical piles of junk food.

I could not possibly care less about the game but I enjoy the cooking.

I couldn't care less about the dumb game either. I will be watching the puppy bowl. I don't mind cooking for them but they don't know that. I find it fun that they treat me extra nice for like a week before. Lol

The chocolate bacon is really good! I dip one end in chocolate coating and sprinkle chopped pistachios on it before it sets. I leave the other end of the bacon slice un dipped so people know it's bacon. I did 3 pounds of it last year and it was gone within 20 minutes of setting it out.

I likely will be cleaning the cat bowl, a soup bowl, the mixing bowl, and the toilet bowl.
The big game will not bowl me over so I will likely not watch the game.

Nachos and melted cheese with peppers is a good snack food for game times though.

I usually make myself a Superbowl Sundae  :D I use Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia FroYo and top it with chocolate syrup and peanuts! Last year I just brought a pizza over to a friend's house but in previous years I've made wings and I've smoked a pork shoulder. This year I'm making donuts but just because that's been my thing lately lol, I have no actual plans for the game

Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream has a factory tour that is kinda cool.  Plus, because it is a production ice cream factory, it really is cool.   There is a modest cost for the factory tour, but you also get a nice sampling of their ice cream.  It is in Vermont.

Super bowl? Is that like a really big bowl? We have a big bowl for making cookie batter in. will that do? If you need something bigger still I have a big stock pot.

Hugs,

I don't like the Superbowl, but I like food and beer so I often go to Superbowl parties. The halftime show and commercials can be decent. Especially when Prince performed! But especially when Left Shark happened!

Chef Marcus Samuelsson's chicken shake makes a fantastic dry rub for wings! I sprinkle it liberally on the wings  and then bake them on a sheet pan. Goes well with a nice blue cheese dressing. Here's the recipe for the shake.
QuoteFor the Chicken Shake, whisk ¼ cup berbere, ¼ cup hot smoked paprika, 2 tablespoons ground cumin, 2 tablespoons freshly ground white pepper, 2 tablespoons celery salt, 1½ teaspoons granulated garlic, and 1½ teaspoons coarse kosher salt together. Store in a jar, out of the light. It makes about 1 cup and will keep for 6 months.

Some of these dips look delicious! I wanna make like half of them.

Brownies are always a win.

Mmmm, I'll be watching the game alone again, naturally and hadn't really thought about it

I'll probably make something I suppose and chop it into bite sized bits for some reason

Ah I've got it!!! An omelette filled with sausage, cheese, bacon, choke cherry preserves and a bar of dark chocolate then wrapped in a butter basted flour tortilla sprinkled with coconut then browned in the oven

Let cool and slice into bits to be dipped in a pineapple, mango and Worcestershire sauce

There is also deep fried butter sticks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-fried_butter

I'll be working over the big game... Knowing the place, there will be a few screens with the game on. No cooking for me this time...

I don't know I feel about chocolate bacon but suppose it would work. Maple bacon is great after all! We don't have anything like the Superbowl in the UK. Even football here (soccer) doesn't seem to attract the same community watching spirit outside of sports bars. Snack wise though I cheese straws are or cheese nibbles we my go to. They can be topped with jalepenos if you like a kick :)

My boyfriend is Australian and I thought I wouldn't have to deal with him being a football nut like American guys.  Wrong!  He turned out to be as big a football nut as my dad and brother. It seems he got into American football before we met.  Damn! Lol

Anyone have any vegetarian dishes besides chips/salsa, hummus, and veggie plates?  I got invited to a party this year and want to bring something but I am not sure what other's will like.

I was thinking a spinach/artichoke dip type thing but I'm not sold on it.

Chocolate covered bacon is not bad.  They do not ruin each other,  though maybe not a great compliment in combo.  Think I prefer to have them separately though.

You could make a cheddar/ beer dip. That usually goes well with football.

I would struggle combining them... I'd happily eat all the chocolate before it got near any bacon!

Yeah my brother is like that. He totally loves bacon but he doesn't like it dipped in chocolate. So I made him some plain bacon he could have all to himself. Everyone else went nuts over the chocolate dipped bacon. But for some reason no one even touched the chocolate covered garlic/dill pickle chips. Ingrates!

Yesterday I ended up making a couple of sausages in the crock pot using a can of beer and some BBQ sauce and chipotle seasoning

Plus I made a seafood pizza with a parmesan cheese sauce and a mix of Italian cheeses, crab meat, shrimp, scallops, pineapple, mushrooms, onions and olives
