Title: Hair Help?
Post by: J2J on February 02, 2018, 10:59:42 PM
While I am not medically transitioning except for taking Finasteride to avoid hairloss.... I still grow out my hair and having troubles....

How do you get that straight and shiny/healthy look without using or using alot of heat like straighteners etc?

Any products? My hair is naturally straight but tends to get a bit frizzy and don't know what to use, I do use a little Argan oil here and there but I am guessing I need to use some other stuff...

I use a hair dryer to blow the hair in place and my had to smooth it into place however I have heavy oily hair. Most likely you need to apply  a conditioner after washing. Your best option would be going to a beauty supply store and ask what product they recommend.

Finally I can talk about something that I know a little about! 😁

I am not an expert at styling hair, heck I am too lazy to even spend any time on my hair. My avatar picture was about 5 minutes effort. Probably can tell huh? 😜 My hair is very frizzy, it is also curly though. Normal day for me is:
If just washed, leave in conditioner. I only was my hair once maybe twice a week though. I do wet my hair every day.
Days that I do not wash I put in anti frizz oil.
Either way I let air dry most days after then scrunch it a few times as it is drying.
Days that I absolutely must dry my hair it's upside down, cold 2 minutes give or take, hot 2 minutes, warm 2 minutes, then cold to finish.

Now I did just get my hair cut yesterday and she straightened it. I paid attention and even called her today to see if she would go over it with me next time. Wash, comb the dead hair knots out with a W I D E tooth comb, a cream of some sort underneath (gonna have to ask her), dry a little, 30 minutes with a big round brush and hair dryer pulling the curl out from the inside out then hair spray When she was done. It was beautiful and I WILL learn to do it! Unlike the makeup thing that I said that I would learn and haven't had any makeup on in over a year. Sheesh, I am pathetic. ☹️

Leave in conditioner helps a lot or anti frizz oil. Mess with it as little as possible after you finish with it. Damp days are my nemesis and I have a tendency to growl as I walk out the door.

Trial and error, you will master it in no time.

A Keratin treatment at the beauty salon will keep hair straight and beautiful for 3 months or so (thinking they have alternatives for peoeple who are allergic to formaldehyde).

I'd say keep the products to a minimum. When growing hair out you want to be as healthy as possible and the more chemicals you put on it the more you risk damage. When I had short hair my hair was very wavy, but the weight of it long seemed to straighten it quite a bit. This will probably be the case for you. Of course, you can always try what Jen Aniston (and I) do to get that smooth straight look. Now and then throw in a few of those huge 3" velcro rollers. I only do it maybe once a week or so, but it helps keep the straight turned-under look.

I used to use leave-in conditioners and avoid blow drying it.

I also used to wash it every day though, which I hear is actually bad for hair so I don't know...

My hair is fine and wavy; so it's hard for it not too look terrible and for it to look healthy. Washing hair every other day is imperative. Eitherwise you're stripping the hair of natural oils. Thickening shampoo and conditioner works great in order make your hair look fuller. Heat protection spray is also necessary. It makes my hair feel a lot softer and more manageable.

My hair is only slightly wavy and tends to be dry.  It's fairly dense but also fine.  To straighten it takes only a few strokes with a heated brush.   To take care of the dryness I only wash it a couple of times a week although I do rinse it and use conditioner more often.  I also use leave in conditioner and oil it once in a while with a mix of coconut and olive oil.  I also just got some thickening shampoo and conditioner and that seems to help.  I need to get a haircut though to clean up the ends.

That is a pretty look for your hair in the back Deborah.

Maybe similar to VM's?

Thank you.  That's my look for the gym.  I usually just tuck it behind my ears unless my wife hazes me for letting loose hairs get all over the kitchen, LOL.
