Title: Fever while on Androgel? FtM
Post by: LavenderVampyre on February 21, 2018, 01:33:18 PM
Hi! I'm new, but I needed somewhere to ask this question besides Facebook groups, which have all been basically hostile to me. Any guys who are on T of any kind get a fever? I'm 6 months into my Androgel hrt this weekend, but it's going slow because my doctor didn't take my blood work as often as she should have, so my dose is still being adjusted.

I got sick with some upper respiratory thing last Thursday after being in the rain, but otherwise I felt fine. Monday I finally went to the med center and they said I had a fever of 100 that increased to 100.5 while there. They did blood tests and chest xrays, heart tests, all that stuff. Couldn't find anything and said I tested negative for the flu. I don't feel particularly like I'm sick with something either, I'm just really tired, weak, and it's day three of this 100 (F) fever.

I am hoping this will just go away, as the nurses didn't provide much help and just sent me home telling me to take Tylenol every 6 hours and drink plenty of fluids. I'm suspecting that it might be the T because my body is SUPER sensitive to everything I put in it. Any of you ever have that happen who are on T? The fever I mean?

I take a little Androgel but I'm MtF, post-op. I had no such reaction to it. Hope you feel better soon. :)

Thanks :) I imagine if it is a reaction from it it's because I'm taking enough to change my hormones.

I'm on Androgel and have never noticed my temperature doing anything strange.   Could you call the dr. who prescribes your T and ask them, or their nurse?  You'd get a more-informed answer that way.

I'm going to tomorrow, but my doctor isn't a specialist, she just studied it herself and still has to look up things when we try to figure out what's going on. To be honest I am suspecting this may just be from a virus but everyone around me is blaming the hormones. I've gotten overheated before earlier in my transition and haven't really been able to find any others who have too, but it was different then. That was hot flashes. This is a genuine fever.

Have to point out that just because the test was negative doesn't mean you can't have flu.... or it could be any number of other illnesses. Or it could be your body's reaction to the T - did you increase your dose? Use a different kind? Hard to say.

When i first started i got hot flashes and felt like i was getting sick. After about a month it evened out and i was fine. I get the same feeling when we change my dose (i'm about six months on, i've been in for blood work and we increased my dose twice since i started). Never had an actual fever, though.

If all of your levels are fine and there are no other symptoms, you might just want to keep an eye on it and let your doc do their research. If it keeps getting higher or doesn't go away, definitely look into it further. It might not hurt to see if your doc can consult with another doc, maybe one with more HRT experience?

I've been using Androgel for over four years now. I'm on a dose (edited out the actual dose now that I understand the rules, sorry!) which puts my T in the lower third of normal for men, and in my experience I've never had a fever that's related to the T. But my hot flashes stopped right away. :-)

In my opinion your fever probably isn't due to the hormones.

Your nurse's advice matches what my SO got from their doc: Tylenol and plenty of fluids.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone for responding. My fever is starting to go down today so I think I may have just been sick with something. I'm still going to talk to my doctor about it, but it's always good to get others' experiences.
