Title: Flying and Travel During Name/Gender Change
Post by: TK9NY on February 22, 2018, 07:13:30 PM
Okay, this might be a stupid question..... and i'll try to explain it the best i can.... but my mom just asked me and now i'm curious. We're planning to take a family trip in April to Key West. We plan on flying. My mom just asked me if she should book the ticket in my current legal name/gender or if she should book it in my "new" name/gender.

It never even occurred to me - not when we said we wanted to go or as i filed the papers today (otherwise i might have considered waiting to start the process). In order to fly the name/gender on the ticket has to match my ID (assuming drivers license)... which if she books now in my current name/gender, may NOT match it in April if everything processes that quickly. But if she uses the "new" name/gender and it isn't officially through when we go then we have the same problem?

Am i making sense? Any thoughts on how to navigate that?

She just texted and said my dad thinks it's too risky and that we just won't go, but now i feel bad because we where all excited to go.....

Go with your legal name. If your  name change happens to go through before the trip, just wait until after the trip to change your ID.

I had to change name / gender on an airline ticket once... our corporate travel office did not pay attention and booked under my preferred name. It was doable on the airline web site, but i did it within a few hours after booking...

Besides that I would agree with Devlyn Stephanie, book under your current legal name and change your ID after the flight... As an alternative you could just change your ID and keep your Passport for a bit....

Edit... Sorry Devlyn...

And that won't send up any red flags anywhere? They won't look me up or something and see the pending change, or already change, and wonder why my ID isn't updated? Do i have to change my SS/License/etc within a certain amount of time after getting the papers for my name change?

It sounds like my dad isn't keen on risking anything even if i get answers..... would it be a better idea to call whatever airline we might use and ask them directly?

Yeah, my passport expired last year... that's how little i travel, or need it.

I guess one option would be to wait and see when things go through, and then book a flight/room if everything goes through on time....

My guess is your name change won't have gone through. If it has, you'll have a court document proving it.

Name changes put you in the AKA category. Revel in your notoriety!  >:-)

OOPS... Sorry... Clearly my brain is not working today... I may need some of the coffee you talked about before... (Or was that Steph? ;D)
