Title: mtf how old were you when you began to transition?
Post by: Shawnna on March 18, 2018, 06:21:34 PM
l'm 56 and have been on HRT for about two years. I'm also scheduled for top surgery in about four months.

I feel like I'm so much older than most of you.  I'm just curious how old you were when you first began to transition.

I started hrt 8 months ago at age 61.  But I started my transition when I was born.  Always had a feminine brain, just needed time to put my body in proper order.

Well I started HRT on my 31st birthday, but about 5 and a half months before that is when I started getting things in order, I started coming out to friends and seeing a therapist and had meetings with a doctor about hormones, so if that counts then I guess I started at 30

Age is only a number, if you are healthy there is no age limit. HRT also tends to be a fountain of youth, makes us look 10 to 20 years younger. I started HRT at 63, and had srs at 66 and I will be 70 next month.  Life is wonderful.

51.

I started in 01-01-15

01=first day of my 01=new self 15 is opposite of 51

I started self meds first for 9 months then hrt.

PS I was going to start sooner but a friend asked me to give it a few more months to make sure I wanted to do this. I actually started my laser hair removal in December 2014

44, just could not stand not taking hrt anymore, hated my yucky male self, even in my crazy disruptive environment. Exact date is 11/28/2014 at around 8:30pm, first pill, girlfriend in tow and all, lol :). Before that, I did hrt in my early 20's, after my stint in Mother Corps, I think 24-25, then stopped, due to no funds and restrictive environment. I just wanted to memorialize this for myself :)

I've been secretly transitioning since childhood and experimented quite a bit, but didn't start actually actively transitioning until my mid 40's

I was to busy with denial and saving the world to admit to it in younger days

I was just short of my 54th birthday when I started my transition 3 years ago.  I will be 57 in May and most people think I am in my early 40's.  I have been amazed at the changes that I have been through the last few years.  I never thought that I could be the woman I've become.  You are never too old to be your true self.

There was a member here a couple years back who was in her 60's when she transitioned.  She was living life to the fullest and had been to Thailand for her bottom surgery.  She tragically passed away a few months after her surgery (nothing transition related) and even if it was only for that briefest of times, she got to live as her true self.

Tomorrows are not a given so live today.....

Wow! Thanks for the great responses!

It seems like starting HRT at 54 isn't that unusual after all.  I've had a very difficult time finding a supportive community with others around my age.  I find groups for parents, kids and people near college ages but my generation never seemed to be represented.

All of the communities are amazing but my life experiences just aren't the same as those just starting out in life. I'm retired with a wife and young child. Those things greatly affect how I approach being trans feminine.

Thank you all for being so kind an accepting to the new girl on the block!

Thank you. 😊

Confession time. 3 years ago I did not wear glasses other than reading glasses. My distance sight was not great but it was always acceptable. I hated people staring at me so I started to wear my reading glasses all of the time so everybody's face beyond 3 feet was a blur, I could not see the looks. I finally gave up on using them to hide, but the reading glasses were very pretty and helped distract from the not so pretty face sooooooo, I went and got prescription glasses that were very pretty and made my vision perfect from any reasonable distance.

I love them also. 😊

Although I crossdressed and bodyshaved all my life, I only started transition at 62 due to so many obstacles being in the way.

I only wish that in 1978 the world was not so closed and opposed to Trans matters or I would have transitioned at 22.

The world is still generally opposed but acceptance is coming gradually and more of us will be transition younger than have to wait which will be wonderful to witness.

No one is either 'too old' or 'too young' when you Transition - you begin your journey when you are ready to do it, when you are at your correct age to do it.

For those who Transition later in life - you still have great experiences for the life you lived.  For we who Transition young, we live a life meant as it will be with its own set of experiences.  The 'What ifs?' abound for us all.

There is a famous Yogi Berra saying:  'When you get to the fork in the road, take it.'  He explained that his home was at the far end of a circular road, that it made no difference whether your turned left or turned right, you still got to his home.

Same for us all.  We arrive at our 'home' whichever is our fork in the road that we travel, young or old.

I was an out-to-my family Trans-child growing up during the 1950s and 1960s.  They considered it cute when I was young ('Oh, Nickie, what a cute little girl!'), but they opposed me as I got into my teens (my dad thought that he could beat it out of me).  I count my official start as when I turned age 18 (1974); I recently celebrated my 40th Anniversary when I began my participation in Stanford University's 'Gender Dysphoria' program (December 1977).  My Transition had its own twists and turns unforeseen when I began.  Yes, it was quite difficult back then - lack of Internet resources, certainly.

Hello Sharon Anne

Precisely. We all transition whenever the time is right.

Just our of interest do you recall the name of the program as I assume they did not use the term "Dysphoria"? Briefly what did it cover apart from the obvious matters of transvestites and transsexuals? Did it cover the inner conflict between mind and body to a significant degree? Is it true in those days they thought incorrectly that all transsexuals were gay (before transition)? Did they not separate sexuality from gender as we do now?

Thanking you

Pamela

I am 38 now....  I started transitioning without HRT around 32 or 33...  then at 34 and 35 I got serious about it and started HRT....  and I have been full-time for about a year and a half now.....   I should have done this many years earlier, but I am making up for lost time!!!!

Pamela

Allow me to refer you and other readers to my personal web-site where I posted my Stanford University Medical Center papers. If anyone here at Susan's will allow my papers to be posted here, please let me know and instruct me how to do that.

     -  (https://slimandme.wordpress.com/2016/09/24/stanfords-program/)

Yes, it was truly the 'Gender Dysphoria Program',  While I can't know what the civilians of that day knew, I can tell you that that term was a kinda inside password among we Transsexuals in those 'old days'.  Anyone who knew that term had to be involved personally or as an ally and were safe companions.

The Stanford program requirements are listed in about five pages.  Cautions included much of what is still advised nowadays.  On the other hand, there are differences due to social and legal changes.

     -  Back then there was no such thing as 'Marriage Equality' - Stanford required that the participant be divorced.  Some states prohibited any Transition until the marriage was dissolved, other states required divorce before SRS / GCS surgery ('Neocolporrhaphy' as the term was back then).

     -  Stanford required minimums at least of two years: either one year RLE before them and one year RLE with them, or if no prior, then two years with them.

     -  'Others relate naturally to you as a woman rather than as a Transsexual' was a major warning.

     -  Their surgery actually cautioned that the patient would not experience orgasm.

     -  There was no dilation back then.  The result was a wide organ.  Some surgery centers required that the patient wear an appliance post-op.

     -  Stanford required that electrolysis be completed before GCS / SRS.

There was no FFS as we know today; Dr. Ousterhout developed that process in the 1990s.  Patients had no recourse back then.  Among my positive factors was that I was lucky to have started young with minimal 'T poisoning'.

Yes, the medical community was highly un-informed about homosexuality and transvestism versus transsexuality.  Transvestites could be easier to exclude.  Many homosexual males were tragically directed toward Transition and surgery.  One common concept was that one partner of a 'Gay' marriage would do the operation and voila they are a heterosexual couple accepted by society.

     -  'Soap' was an ABC network TV show.  Jody, a homosexual character (played by Billy Crystal), sought to have the surgery in exactly this manner.

     -  'What Sex Am I?' was a 1985 HBO documentary (produced by both Stanford and Janus) that examined M-F, F-M, transvestism, and homosexuality.

My case had its own bumps along the way.  I originally resided at quite small, out-of-the-way towns; Transition was complicated before Stanford.  Once accepted, travelling to and from Palo Alto was considered a hardship because of my remoteness; they allowed me to present my papers to local counsellors and physicians for local services. Then I moved to metropolitan Salt Lake City where not one physician or counsellor accepted me til 1983; a counsellor a few years ago told me of hearing about my case through professional circles and confirmed to me that I was the only official Transsexual patient at Utah during the early 1980s.  My Inter-sex diagnosis also changed my course when doctors declared me medically / biologically female before I had any subsequent operations.

I had one counsellor during the 1990s who seemed to lack comprehending sexuality from gender identity.  He frequently admonished me 'You had the operation to have sex with men, not women'.  So I never told him about my Lesbian girlfriend.

I span the old and the new - I transitioned four decades ago and I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to do a revision with Dr. Chettawut.  I hope this narrative helps.

Sharon

Fascinating summary thank you.

It is always interesting to read of trans matters (including individual cases) from the "early" days of the 1970s.

I really thought the term "dysphoria" although correct was only used for the last 20 years. I stand corrected.

Thank you for all your time.

I am so glad you describe yourself now as happy.

Good luck for the future.

No one is either 'too old' or 'too young' when you Transition - you begin your journey when you are ready to do it, when you are at your correct age to do it.

There are 2 parts to that statement... I agree with the first part -- At least for me in in my day (mid 90's - times have changed) you started when the pain of not doing it exceeded the fear of doing it.

But the "correct" age? I can say with 100% certainty it was at least  not the optimal age, although In a different environment it would have been at a different age. I started teh process at 39 and I am 62 now...

If I had started 11 years earlier, while it likely would not have made much difference physically (as I would still have been physically mature), it would have made a HUGE difference socially, my life and transition trajectory would have been totally different from what it has been.

I don't think 39 was the correct age for me to start, it was just the age where the pain overwhelmed the fear. If I had had the right support, or teh times had been different,  it would not have been at 39.

The city where I went to college had a gender clinic back in the 70's and 80's. Its as not as well known as Stamford and only referred to surgery...  I had not hear about it until much later after it had disbanded.

The therapist I had in the 90's had been part of it... She as much as told me that because of my physicality I would not have been accepted there... (that was a big factor in my fear of transition)

Age 62, almost 2 years ago.

I'm one of those 'transition or die' folks, repressed myself way too long, leading to some damage that makes me an ongoing work.

I started cross dressing as a kid in the 70s (my mom told me a few years ago, that she knew I was doing so at the time), but I really started transitioning at age 35 in late 1998 (when I first saw my therapist), with HRT started just before I turned 36 (would have done it sooner but the gender program I was in, was between healthcare providers for HRT [and I was not about to put up with hostility from doctors, making HRT inquiries in small city that i lived in]).  Had an orchiechtomy in July 2001, when I was 37, and my SRS in Nov. 2003, when I was 40.

I really wanted to transition much younger (1970s & 80s).  Above and beyond the resistance and hostility I got from my parents, when I came out to them as a teenager, there was NO INFORMATION for my neck of the woods (Wisconsin), on where to go for help.  My "progressive" alma mater (the University of Wisconsin), didn't even offer transition services, much less SRS, when I looked into transitioning during college (despite having a world class medical school), and then I was broke after college, and also wasted time trying last ditch attempts, to substitute for/distract me from transitioning.

I found out about the gender program I went through, in the mid 90s (and found out to my chagrin that it had been around since the early 80s, but was very much underground/not well known at the time), really got down to business with trying to save money for transition, and SRS (I figured I needed at least $30,000 at the time), but reached a point where it basically became do or die for me.  I was nowhere near my financial goals, but I was on the verge of killing myself, so I took a deep breath, and took the plunge. At times it was rough financially (especially, when my company did some major downsizing in 2002, and in order to keep a job during the recession that was going on at the time, I took the equivalent of a $5/hr cut in pay [I was a salaried employee, and ended up as an hourly employee]).  It was also rough at times emotionally.  It's very daunting to transition in a workplace that employs several hundred people (most of whom know you to a greater or lesser extent, because of your job - one person from work acted like a bastard, and outed me at a local Radio Shack where he worked part time, in front of about 10 people, shortly after my legal name change in late 2000 [I ended up filing a complaint with Radio Shack about it]), and it's no fun becoming estranged from friends and family.

I persevered though and reached the light at the end of the tunnel.  There was never any thought in my mind about finishing things up.  I worked myself half to death to scrape up the money, had my SRS (along with a trach shave and a nose job), and I got on with life.  As I said earlier, I wish I could have done it when I was younger, but there is the sobering knowledge, that due to being microphallic (as I was told by both the urologist who did my Orchiectomy, and Dr. Suporn), my surgical result from what was state of the art at the time I wanted it done (the 1980s), would have been disastrous, with next to nothing for vaginal depth.  Because I had it done at a time when additional surgical techniques had been developed, the results were quite good.  :)

Ellen - who talks too much :)

Well, I started the whole cross dressing thing at an early age, and that earned me my dad's wrath.  I was caught out at various points by my mum after they had split. Fortunately for me, I started my transition in college, I was quite lucky looks wise, so it was easy enough; and thanks to a friend's dad, I had been working weekends for my last 3 years of school so I had a bit of funding behind me.

It was very bumpy, my mum and I fought like cat and dog about it; and to this day it's a strain on my relationship with mother/sister.

I'm 50 and have started transitioning this year. I plan to start with HRT this fall and also have my 24/7 this fall.

Yes, I feel old and sometimes regret that I didn't start earlier. On the other hand, I have three lovely kids and a very successful career (so far). Anyway, looking back rarely helps, just keep moving forward!

I started at 41 (two years ago) with HRT patches. Sadly I will always be closeted with my M2F transition. I had hoped HRT would treat me fairly and make even changes overall -- smooth skin, larger hips, muscle reduction, body aroma, boobs and major face changes. But 80% of my changes have been heavy breast growth. Very heavy. I went from near-flat to full C-cups in this time. After 22 months - finally - I have suddenly (and very quickly) growing hips. But nothing to my face (that I can see). Hiding while fully closeted is getting tough now. HRT is so YMMV....

We all change at different rates. Don't feel bad about the rate or what happens when. It will all happen in time. My breasts started first to C cups in about 8 months. Skin is softer and body odour is very different. My sense of smell and sense of touch is changed as well. Hips have gained 3 inches and chest and waist have dropped in size with weight lose. It will all come about.
Hang in there and best wishes for success

Shellie,

May I ask with your seemingly good results body shape wise why you'd have to live closeted?

If you don't feel comfortable answering, I totally understand and don't want to be rude.

It's mainly because I'm struggling myself with starting HRT and coming fully out of my own closet.

I don't like to talk too much about my private life, but simply -- what life I do have would end if I changed anything in a public way. I grew up in a tragic family and as a result a couple of them depend on me for things. Getting into too many details I could write a book. Transitioning (living as I do privately) is just a way to bring some measure of calmness to an otherwise hopeless situation. So sad really, but I have no choice. I just don't want to bring any more difficulties into the lives of others who are close to me. Am I living a sort of a lie? Perhaps. But I hurt no one in my transition. It's just what I wish for and am trying to live a bit of what I should have been all along. Simple....but complicated...

EDIT: This was written as an answer to Zille. But somehow I did it wrong.... ::)

Thank you Shellie,

Didn't mean to pry but life experiences are always a source of things to learn and whatever the reasons, they are all valid as they apply to your life and nobody can ever truly put themselves fully in others shoes.

I have a my last remaining parent who have fallen ill with terminal cancer and I'm partly not taking any decisions as to not complicate the death of my farther whom I've considered on of my best friends and a hero in my life by how he has lived his life. One could ask if I'm not lying to him in the process and maybe I am and it's part of holding me back to discuss this further with my SO. But it's what's right for me, right now.

Thank you for sharing and I understand the privacy feeling but with so many amazing stories to learn from here at Susan's I did A) not want to misunderstand your situation and B) also ask you personally as I think it can often help to open up to complete strangers what don't know the specifics in your own life.

I hope for the best for you moving forward and for the things to happen as you need them.

Thanks again for answering.

Feeling very good about finally knowing me and accepting me after decandes of wondering and shame.  Feeling good about the steps I am taking....and scared about the potential impact on my amazing teen age kids, partner, friends and very successful career.

Congrats to you on finding and embracing you!  Everyone deserves to be and bring their authentic selves to this world.   It makes for a much better world.

It was a couple of weeks after my 40th birthday. I suppose my mid-life crisis was not being able to pretend anymore. I needed to tell my SO what was inside, deep inside of me. Once I figured out that being transgender does not make me some sort of defect, I went completely in. I do not feel I had a choice but to do so. I was reaching the end of what I could stand pretending to be a man. I was to the point that death seemed better than living.

I wish I could have known transition was possible back in my youth. I would have made it happen. At least today I no longer wish for the end of existence. Aside from life drama, I am closer to being happy than I have ever known.

There is the old addage: "The truth will set you free".

That began two years ago and now I will be getting bottom surgery on my 30th birthday! :D

Growing up and living in rural Texas really stunted when I could start. Like most I wish I could of started earlier and I would of been happy ten years ago to enjoy my 20s, but at least I will have my 30s on as the true me

I think because there has always been a stigma not just with writing us off, but also how we define ourselves or get defined.

For me I agree Ive known Ive felt this way forever but how I was raised and brought up I eventually wrote it off, im now at a point at 30 where Im ready to be happy and who I was always suppose to be. I do wish it was easier to be real back when I was younger but at lease now society is more accepting (for the most part).

I got in contact with the gender clinic at 17, but have been gatekept until now stilll. Started self medicating hormones at 18 after a year had gone and nothing had happened with the official health care. About to turn 20 in the summer. Sweden is quite horrible compared to a lot of different places it seems...

I started in 2013 when i was 26.  Never in a million years did I ever believe that I would change as much as I did, or that I would be able to blend in as much as I am able too. I went from being like a male model to how I look in my profile picture.

I feel for you...I´ve also gotten help from everywhere else, four different countries and doctors from those countries, than from Finland, from where I am and system is as sucky as Swedish one.

I was 34 or 35 when I first started HRT, but that transition failed to many different things, one being the disrespectful way they treat you in the Finnish gender clinic.

Started transitioning again at 40 with the help of the rest of the world this time. Wasn´t going to step into our official system anymore...

I started in 1990 when I found out there was a term for what I was feeling, transsexualism.  Started medical transition in 1996 at 29.  Made it a ways before having to push it to a back burner.  Started socially transitioning in 2013 and restarted medical again in 2015.

I started when I was 35, but I didn't go full-time until I was 44. There were a few things that delayed my transition; There was a backlash from my family when I came out; I had employment issues when I started HRT the first time; I had gained a lot of muscle from 20 years of bodybuilding, so It took several years to lose enough muscle for me to even consider going out in public dressed femininely; I had a Klingon forehead that absolutely had to be reconstructed, so I had to save money for some FFS; and I went back to school so I could learn to do something that would allow me to earn more money, and be able to pay for everything I needed to transition.

Yes Jamiekisses, that's what so many of us do - bury and rebury, suppress and repress and consequently we become oppressed and depressed. Then we take action as we can take GD no more.

I'm 54 now. I guess I/ you could say I technically started my transition right at puberty. I'll explain. It was when my body finally did start to grow hair at around 16 or 17, I immediately shaved it all off. In my mind I didn't even think girls were supposed to grow hair at all back then. So I shaved my legs, pubic area, chest, underarms, and anywhere I saw hair growing except my head. I shaved so much of my body that I used to get called a sissy nearly everyday in school. In fact I was known as such a sissy boy that the other boys would never pick me to play in the sports activities with them. Funny thing is, all those other boys hated me because they couldn't understand how I ended up with such gorgeous girlfriends being such a sissy boy lol. I just always knew I was really a girl, but you didn't say anything in that redneck part of the south I grew up in. So to conform with the times I chose to live my life as a male and do what this society has approved as the manly things to do. The dysphoria never went away though. In fact, not only has it not gone away ever, but it has worsened in the last year. After several failed marriages and my current one struggling, I realized that my real problem is that I need to and must be a girl. I just can't perform as the man anymore and that has caused our sexual relationship to struggle immensely. Honestly, don't get me wrong, I do still love the female body and find it very sexy. I should say I think I'm still sexually attracted to women. That is to say, when I see a sexy woman that catches my eye, I start staring intensely, but I'll be honest sometimes I'm not sure if I'm checking them out for me, or if it's really the fact that I just want to look like her. I've noticed I find myself more and more fantasizing about having sexual encounters with men, as that sexy woman of course hehe. And to be honest, that's been really confusing for me because I haven't even started hrt yet. The past year or so I decided that I needed to start my formal transition, so I started buying women's clothes, panties, and lingerie. I have been wearing only the women's panties exclusively for over a year now, and recently I started wearing the women's jeans and shorts out in public, even in man mode lol. I started seeing a therapists at the beginning of this year at 54. I was scheduled to start HRT already but delays with my doctor have pushed that back yet again. Hoping to start this Thursday at my next appointment with my therapists. Sorry about the long useless story but it's kind of relevant to what I feel is my actual starting point. I started unofficially transitioning at around 16 or 17 in my mind, but physically transitioning at 53 with clothing, and I would say now officially transitioning at 54 with therapy and meds to start within the next few days hopefully. That's my story and I'm sticking to it lol...

61. I've favored even years throughout my life and found it very unusual that I would begin such an important undertaking in an odd year. Life is full of surprises!

Absolutely correct Shawna. 54 is not old to start at all. There are many of us "seniors" here as you must have now noticed. I wish you every success for the future and I thank you for this thread.

As stated previously I started at 62.

I "officially" started on July 1, 2018 when I created my account here, I am 24, but I've been living with a very strong gender dysphoria since forever. I hope that I can begin HRT really soon, but first I need to find a therapist and psychologist. After which of course I will need to find a doctor to prescribe me my happy pills lol  :)

I'm also practicing my feminine voice and doing a lot of feminizing, I look forward to my future and how my body will finally be what my mind is.  :D

I believe fire was the technological breakthrough when I began the "transition".. haha!  I don't know about a mental transition --- does that ever end for anyone as we go through life?  As for the physical -- around 12 or 13 -- sheesh I can't remember the exact date. I met other girls who were  also experiencing the same dilemma at that age. One thing leads to another, and doctor here I come  ^-^ (doctors in mexico are so obliging)

My MTF journey and time line below, it was a "layered" approach to transitioning that started in,

2010 (@ 51 yrs ) - After realizing this is not going away, I ended the denial and "came out to myself". I sought the assistance of a gender therapist, and began to build my support network.

2011 (@ 52 yrs) - Began seeing an Internist that specialized in treating GD patients. Started HRT, began voice training, attended support group meetings, and reached out to others.

2012 (@ 53 yrs) - Started facial hair electrolysis. I would need over 300 hours of treatment to be free.

2013 (@ 54 yrs) - Started living full time, changed my legal name and gender, came out at work.

2016 (@ 57 yrs) - GCS with Dr Bowers in CA.

2019 (@ 60 yrs) - Living life as female and totally enjoying it. Transition is really never done however, still have things I can look forward to (social growth), life is wonderful and full of discoveries at this stage....

3.5 months before turning 52. 5.5 months in and the peace of mind since starting HRT has changed, and probably saved, my life. The constant baseline anger and lifelong depression for unknown (until recently) reasons were taking their toll.
I have a LOT of factors between what I want and what is possible, so I do the little things that I can to express myself such as:

1) Sitting to p
2) Wearing girl clothes that can be over looked (jeans, sweaters, etc)
3) HRT (Estradiol and Spiro)
4) Losing weight and taking better care of myself
5) Using women's products where I can (deodorant, etc)
6) Being around other women (trans and cis) who accept me for me. This is very important to me as I was mostly socialized as male growing up. There is a LOT of body language and verbal characteristics that I need to learn.

Currently these things are making me happy. I am at peace as a "resting" state for the first time in my life, as opposed to "hey, I found peace!" for a bit.

If anyone is curious about my story, my intro can be found here: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,244130.0.html

It could be said that my path to understanding was delayed due to outside influences. I am glad I eventually got here.

I have the psychological transition to self acceptance that began when I was 62

I have my beginning public transition of dressing androgynous, piercing ears, etc at 68

I have my full female public appearance at 70, plus the start of HRT.

Today I am post FFS and GRS, full female IDs and passports, will be 72 in two weeks.

I think I qualify for "better later than never" crown of this forum :)

Wore my first female garment at 4 years old, then when I could after that. Divorced at 32 as my wife said I made her feel inadequate as a mother and she was not a lesbian. Married a supportive woman at 46, threw away my male underwear. Progressed to living female at home and male outside, then started HRT at 65. My whole life has been a slow transition, and I don't know if I will ever realise my true self as all I know is the journey.

I envy you so much, I began 10 years later

it took the doctors 6 months to actually prescribe me the pills, when it finally happened I was 27.

Your 20s are still young enough to get excellent results from hrt. If it hadn't been for my dad I would probably have had to wait until age 18. He called many endos and gyns until he finally found a gyn willing to give a 17 year old hrt. She required a letter from 2 therapists, interviewed me, then my dad by himself. Then she had like 4 different documents he had to sign giving his consent. My dad wanted me to start hrt asap because he wanted my whole transition done as quick as possible. He had researched trans kids and read that the younger a trans kid starts blockers and hormones the better the result

Oh yes, I know how lucky I am to have him. He also paid for my SRS. I am surprised my dad has been so accepting and loving with me. He was a Marine and is now  a cop. He's a gym rat and pretty much your stereotypical masculine guy. But he never tried to force masculinity on me. I had such a tantrum when he tried to take me to get my hair cut that he just gave up when I was 6. He started cutting my hair himself. But he allowed me to keep it shoulder length. When it went past my shoulders he would cut it but he never cut it shorter than my shoulders. He let me wear gender neutral clothes in any colors I wanted and he even let me have both pink and purple sheets and bedspreads. When I was 12  I talked him into letting me wear mascara and eyebrow pencil. I told him I would look more normal if my lashes and brows had color. After he knew for sure I was trans he wanted me to transition and have the surgery as soon as it was possible. He said he wanted me to transition and have surgery while I was young so it was all behind me and done so it wouldn't be an issue when I got older.

I'm surprised my dad was and is so accepting. It's not that he isn't loving, he totally is, it's just that considering he's such a masculine guy and the fact my grandpa and uncle are so un accepting of LGBT people I'm just surprised my dad is so accepting. He was also very young when he raised Tyler and I. He was 17 when Tyler was born and 19 when I was born. But my dad and I have always been close. He considers me his child, not he and my mothers child so I think that has a lot to do with him accepting me so easily.  When I was born my mother was freaked out that I was albino. She considers it almost as a deformity actually. I found out fairly recently from my grandma that my mom wanted to put me up for adoption after I was born. But my dad told her that wasn't going to happen. So she told him it was up to him to take care of me then, and she absolutely meant it. It was my dad who fed me, changed me, bathed me and got up in the middle of the night to feed me. I have no memories of my mom doing anything for me growing up. I only remember my dad doing everything for Tyler and I both. Considering he was only 19 and had a 2 year old and an infant to take care of, he was and is a very good father. I would think someone that young wouldn't be very patient with with  a 2 year old and an infant but my dad was.  He never spanked or hit us and never did when we got older either. My mom once told me I was a very needy and clingy child. She said I always wanted to cuddle with my dad or be in his lap and she didn't know how he could not just push me away. He never did that but the very few times I ever tried to get in my mom's lap she did push me away or pick me up and put me on my dad's lap. I guess it doesn't matter why my dad has always been so loving and accepting with me. Whatever the reason I am very lucky to have him. I did ask him why he had been so accepting of me being such a fem child. He said he didn't know why I was so fem and so unlike my brother but that was just how I was and he knew nothing he did would change it. He said all trying to force masculinity on me would do was make me miserable and make me hate him and that he couldn't stand the thought of me being miserable and unhappy or me ever hating him.
