Title: This means war
Post by: Devlyn on March 27, 2018, 08:48:25 PM
I came home to this. The label was chewed off so I couldn't even tell who sent it to me.

And now, every squirrel must die.  >:(

Are we sure it wasn't chewed on by a passing Laurie?

The squirrel may die anyway. Many animals find caffeine poisonous and chocolate has enough to do the job. It's one of the reason they tell you not to feed chocolate to your pets.

Yes Dena: you are most likely correct.  I had a dog once that ate too much chocolate and I had to take her to the vet for treatment.   I don't know however if that applies to squirrels... I know that mice can seemingly eat chocolate and the keep on living.

I hope your neighbors ain't too liberal. I use a live trap for squirrels. Any thing resembling a pet can be safely released. Squirrels get the business end of my break barrel pellet gun, which is required for shooting squirrels in Texas. Consider the fact that firing an actual firearm within town limits is illegal. Pellet guns are not.

Squirrels are an introduced pest in most locales including my town. It is OK to dispatch them in my town using traps but not with poison or pellet guns. They have done damage in my garden and chewed pumpkins on porches around Halloween. I had to take care of these pests after one damaged 40% of my corn crop one year. They take usually one bite with a lot of saliva, which ruins the fruit. In fruit trees they bite and drop the unripe fruit! Mine is a suburban subsistence garden as I'm disabled and on a limited budget.  These animals are getting smarter for food sources as time goes on. Your chocolate is the latest, but the proposed welfare food boxes are next! They cause damage average of $20,000 per nesting in attics in my area before these critters get discovered.
You must rid of these! Don't be squeamish! Trapping and releasing elsewhere may not help and may be illegal to be released in certain areas such as agricultural land. At the local parks may be OK but the squirrels already there are territorial and will drive them out. Besides, releasing them within several miles from your house is close enough for these critters to return. Check your local laws!
I noticed as I bump off the alphas in the area, the younger ones that quickly take over are dumber and don't explore the garden for awhile. There were no pumpkins on the porches molested last Halloween on my block due to my efforts! I wedge the trap under my tomato cages and I get a lot of them there. I even caught one without bait! These critters are curious of anything resembling a tunnel. I also have to trap the mice with the little Victors near the squirrel trap as they tend to get at the bait first. Bait with a trail of peanut butter on cracker pieces from outside of the trap, through the front and into the rear of the trap and past the trigger ramp.

My honey bunny :)

Don't anybody worry, humane treatment of the squirrels is the furthest thing from my mind.  >:-)
I use a Crosman break barrel with a scope. I routinely kill them around my bird feeders. This one
should have stuck with sunflower seeds.

I have had things chewed on by many different pests. Judging from the size of the rips, I suspect something with larger teeth/mouth bite radius. Like a dog, possibly a cat. Possibly a delivery driver that missed lunch?

When it comes to choosing between squirrels and people, I lean toward squirrels. Of course, some people are squirrels. If people didn't multiply like rabbits, maybe they wouldn't be so bad. I think of it this way, which one destroys the environment wherever they go. Which is more likely to destroy the world? I have never heard of squirrels committing domestic violence or needing a restraining order or having unpaid parking tickets. As far as  I know, they don't discriminate against trans people, Devlyn's picture is exhibit A. I think if more people aspired to live like the squirrels, we would be better off. What, you say it was 'milk chocolate.' I might have to reassess.

First, let me thank you again.  I had copied and pasted your instructions into a rich text doc and had to do all the steps all over again, lol.

I'm sorry you don't remember this but as it is obvious from the photo, you were quite traumatized when this picture was taken when you were little.  Of course, that's you on the left and your older brother whom we don't talk about on the right.

We've got a raccoon issue here, and you don't even want to know what one of the professional pest removal people's suggestions was for driving them off. It involved tactics a psychotic killer might employ.  :icon_chainsaw:

The battle continues.... thanks for the SITREP .

Years ago I shot a pesky Woodpecker with my shotgun... the woodpecker was ruining one of my nice and also very prominent fir trees.  After I shot it, it still was clamped to the tree about 35 feet up, even though it was very dead.  It took me two hours with sticks and with ladders, risking my life,  to knock it down.   I was later informed by a friendly neighbor that Woodpeckers were an endangered species in my neck of the woods....   I will deny shooting it if asked.   Where is the body?   ???   I don't know "nothin "

Maybe birdshot is good for trees.  In southern England in January, apple trees are wassailed.  For some reason, since the invention of the shotgun, this ancient tradition has involved firing at them as well as singing to them.  (They say that you should be wary of biting into birdshot when eating game.  Perhaps in England this includes apple pies.)

This all reminds me of a song I heard when I was a child.  Part of it went

"Squirrels too are very cute as they go up a tree
but with my trusty rifle, they can't excape from me."

It was sung by someone called Sodomite Sam or something like that.  However, I recall that he loaded his gun with gumdrops.  Maybe that is the peaceful compromise.  The hunter still has the satisfaction of blasting at them, while the varmints satisfy their sweet tooth without breaking into parcels.

This is how we hunt the squirrel in England, although the technique is being demonstrated by Americans:

It seems to have been successful in reducing the numbers of indigenous red squirrels but the invasive American grey squirrels are a tougher bunch.  However, now that a famous American varmint hunter (and Susan's Place member) has settled in England, perhaps she might be persuaded to help.

If the hunting method shown above seems a bit strenuous, you can lie back and listen to Ernest Tomlinson's rendition from his English Folk Dance Suite:
