Title: Dysphoria Side Effects
Post by: violentabyss on April 05, 2018, 01:39:49 AM
Hello,

I'm 16, out, but am not medically transitioned in any way. Dysphoria is frequent and frankly debilitating, sometimes to the point where I can't walk because it draws my brain's attention to what's between my legs. When I get really, really dysphoric, normally triggered by deadnaming, misgendering, and the like, I find myself twitching, normally in my neck, but sometimes full body. It's like a convulsion. I can stop it if I really try, but I just get really irritable if I hold it in. I'm ticcing just thinking about it lol.
I have a therapist and we don't know what this is, if it's a tic or anxiety disorder or if this is just a side effect of the struggles of being trans. All I know is it's definitely triggered by gender stuff.

Just curious if anyone has had a similar experience or advice.

What you describe certainly sounds like an extreme reaction to what is bothering you. There are few of us who have reported the physical symptoms you describe. For many of us we were just miserable with life in general.

This is best described as severe depression which we dealt with in different ways. For myself, I immersed myself in distractions and denial. For others, especially those who feel that they have no hope, have resorted to self destruction.

Your therapist is the best person to see in order to resolve your psychological issues, but maybe there is a physical issue as well. I suggest you see a neurologist, as they are trained to recognize unusual physical symptoms, such as the ones you describe.

Hi, violentabyss!

Welcome to Susan's.

Unfortunately, I don't have the expertise to know what is goig on for you.  Your best bet is to keep working on it with your therapist.  Does your therapist have experience specifically with gender issues?  If not you may want to ask for referral to someone who has that experience.
