Title: Couples therapy
Post by: Karen on April 06, 2018, 11:56:41 AM
Hi all....

My wife and I would like us to do marriage counselling, our couples therapy.   Do you have any experience or advice on finding the right therapist, and how to make the most of it?

Try to find one that has both gender dysphoria and marriage counseling experience.

Yes, a good therapist will help you and your wife to navigate this.  A bad therapist will try to help you to overcome this and be a better man for your wife.   I got incredibly lucky since I happen to live where a really well known gender therapist happens to be.  Colorado Springs.  Dara Hoffman-Fox is my therapist.  Dara has written a book, and has a very popular YouTube channel, and can be seen a little bit in the documentary "Growing up Coy".  Dara is amazing, and is non-binary, and Dara worked with myself and my wife both together and separately to help us both figure out how to handle this whole thing.  I used to think that therapy was for those who were broken.  And at first I felt like succumbing to therapy was like admitting that I was some kind of seriously screwed up.  But now, I am extremely thankful for the therapy time I have had, and the incredible help it has provided to myself and my wife.

But yes....Absolutely search for therapists in your area that specialize both in gender dysphoria AND marriage counseling.  That way, the therapist will know how to handle both things, and how they relate to each other, and will be able to help your wife to understand that this truly is the right and best thing for you.  I don't think you mentioned in your post that the being trans is even a problem.  I just assume it is since it so often tends to be the case.  There are a couple good websites with therapist directories that allow you to filter only therapists who work with trans or specialize in gender issues.  You absolutely do not want some conservative Christian therapist!  They will not have your best interests in mind.
