I may have a bit of a controversial view on this topic and I have struggled with it for a bit: Of course I would prefer a trans person playing a trans person in any movie.
But in the end, having a trans person in a movie no matter if played by a cis person or a trans person is the really important part. It is about trans visibility.
Acting is always assuming a role. Gay actors having to play husband in a straight marriage, straight actors having to play gay, trans people having roles matching their gender identity.
In the end I am not sure how I feel about this, but it would not stop me from watching the movie and then judge based on how the trans person is represented.
Sarah,
I am conflicted some about the cis-playing-trans issue as well. I think it is more important for an actor to portray the role well. I think it may actually be better that a cis actor do the part, if done well, because that is an ally, who has made an effort to understand, in our fight presenting our case for us.
In the end, any well done depiction of our struggle and our normalcy is a good thing. Any depiction that caricatures us as sub-human in any way is to be boycotted, regardless of the actor.
Stevi
I don't know how i feel anymore looks like a good movie though
I think the main issue is why does a trans woman always get played by a cis man or trans woman (like in sens8) and not played by a cis woman?
