Title: When you experience hate for the first time
Post by: Cassandra B on May 10, 2018, 10:25:28 AM
I'm a DSP worker and run three different sites with clients of varying disabilities. I'm lucky enough to work for an employer that is very progressive in their attitude towards Transgendered individuals, but there is definitely a down side.

The down side of my job is having to go with my clients to places that are less then inviting to the LGBTIQ community, I honestly didn't think I would stand out last night  beyond my long hair, but apparently I was putting off a very female vibe yesterday... nothing I did, it was just one of those days where my features looked more female. Details aside I spent the next 90 minutes among a group of people that went out of their way to not acknowledge my existence, regardless of how awkward or uncomfortable it made the situation.

Those people were kind in comparison to the few who glared at me with palpable disgust and hate... it's one thing to know that you are going to encounter people that hate your existence, not because of anything you have done, but simply because you exsist, it is entirely another to experience that hate first hand; I have never in my life been concerned for my physical safety until last night.

My first time was in Church when someone told me that all LBGT should be killed.  This was before any sort of transition though so he wasn't expressing it to me directly.  Maybe if he knew he would not have said anything.  It kind of ruined going to Church for me though.

This was a church setting and the thing is, I believe that faith and LGBTIQ are NOT mutually exclusive to each other, they can coexist; unfortunately, it is those who have just enough knowledge to reinforce their beliefs, but lack understanding of the basic messages of faith and spiritually.

Not the first but recently. Just about a month ago.

"You're Going to Have to Help Me with My Bags and I'm Not Going to Tip You"

I had a Uber passenger today who actually said that to me. I picked her up on a corner where a guy had hailed her an Uber. The ride was under his name. When I opened the window he explained that he didn't need a ride but it was for her. She had all her belongings in several trash bags in a grocery cart. He asked me to give her a ride to the bus station. 'Hmmmmm,' I thought. Her kid gets in the back seat and she starts screaming at her. 'Double Hmmmmm," I'm thinking. She gets in and starts complaining about how she just got beat up by another woman and I totally believed her as she was sporting a big bruise on her brow where a patch of skin had been scraped away. Apparently by another lady's fist. After about a 1/4 mile and the passenger seat beeping at us twice I gently suggested, "That's you I think." Then she explodes at me, "LISTEN. GIVE ME A BREAK LADY. AND YOU'RE NOT A LADY. WE BOTH KNOW "WHAT" YOU ARE." (I'm transgender). The rest of the way she just recited a jeremiad of complaints about her life as I did my best to calm her speaking in soft, dulcet tones. I dropped her off at the Greyhound bus station downtown, got all her bags into the station, and as a parting shot she says, "Thanks lady! I mean MAN!!!"

Her attitude is probably what got her beaten up.

I cannot remember the first time I was hated for being trans. There was so much hate going on in the 1990s, I can only remember the worst situations. One that comes to mind was being kicked out of the community medical clinic I went to in North Carolina, by a doctor as soon as he read my medical information. Then, there was the time I was not allowed to apply for a driver's license in Mississippi until after I contacted the ACLU.

It's that they use religion to justify their cultural beliefs. The two can be different.

One of the ones I remember the most is a father and son on the metro (they were tourist).  I'm heading home after a long day, it's hot and I'm melting a little in the makeup department.  I made the mistake of clearing my throat.  My voice is good but some things like clearing my throat coughing and sneezing get me clocked quick.  The kid whispers to his dad and the next thing I know they turn completely around and start starring at me and laughing..they are so close they could touch me if they wanted.  I was so embarrassed...they wouldn't stop.  Today I would have called for assistance from the train driver....but back then, I just got up and got off the train.....I couldn't stop crying.  I come home to my wife and get the "What did you expect speech."
