Title: Why are we here?
Post by: Nero on December 27, 2007, 05:29:14 PM
On earth, that is. Why is there an earth? Or a universe for that matter?

I want to hear from religious and non-religious peeps. What do you believe? Why are we here? What is the point of it all?

Topic open to interpretation. Discussion and questions about others' beliefs welcome. Criticism is not.

Even if there is an afterlife, why do we have an afterlife? Is there a purpose to an afterlife? Why isn't this life enough? Because we're not enjoying this one? Sometimes I think we're really concerned with these questions because we feel we're not allowed to enjoy this life. We're told our life belongs to something or someone else and not to us.

It's all about duty and purpose and what mom wants or God wants or your country wants or what your boss wants. You're supposed to be self sacrificing and help the homeless and starving people.
But if you take the attitude that you're here for just one thing, to make yourself happy and enjoy your life, your life belongs to you and you don't owe anybody anything, these questions aren't so important anymore. You can be satisfied with saying, "I don't know."

I'm satisfied with saying I don't know.

A bunch of accidents and coincidences made up this whole universe, planet, and the life that crawls around on it.
I have no idea why.  Thinking about it can sometimes hurt and so I've learned to not think about it.

Hum...good question and one that I don't think a mere human can answer to be honest...assuming you believe in a higher being that is...

I think the earth is a prison for all the bad soles in the universe and they are sent here to learn their life's lesson...why else would existence on this plane suck so bad???

Hum...guess I'm in a pissy mood...off to bed for me then...

Peace and love,
Izzy

"I think the earth is a prison for all the bad soles in the universe and they are sent here to learn their life's lesson...why else would existence on this plane suck so bad???"

Could be that life is just a trial run for heaven, which also might suck.  Like college - which sucks - prepares you for real life, which also sucks.

It doesn't all suck that bad.

There is good stuff too.  When you forget there is good stuff, it is time to put away the bad and look for the good again.

Make the changes that matter.

I guess that's why I'm here. To make sure that this meat puppet I inhabit gets through it's journey okay.

Oh no, I've just had a revelation.  Our physical and emotional selves are like puppies.  Our intellectual and spiritual selves are here to care for those puppies and guide them through life as well as can be done.

Now, come here so I can hug you.   :)

Why would we not be here?

We are here for a good time, not for a long time.  So make the most of it.  If there is some huge answer to that question you're going to find out soon enough.  Why rush it?

Why are we here?
Because our parents didn't use contraception.

What's our purpose?
No purpose beyond procreation and whatever we delude ourselves into believing makes life worthwhile

Why do we exist?
Refer to 1st question

Why are some people rich and some poor?
Some people are lucky and some aren't

Why must we get old and die?
Entropy

Why can't we live forever?
Because our bodies are frail and in a gradual state of decay

What the purpose of our existence?
Refer to 2nd question

Why are people murdered everyday?
Because the human mind is rationality draped on an animalistic emotionality. When we feel anger or desperation, the animal is unleashed, and we become capable of murder

Why does the lord let so many bad things happen?
The lord does not let things happen or stop things from happening because the lord is imaginary.

Hi, Nero,

To quote Trapper John McIntyre, "It's for greater minds than ours, Hawkeye."

It's not why I am here that matters to me.  It's what I do while I'm here that does.

Why are we here?  Our parents brought us in this world

Why is there an Earth/Universe?  God must have gotten bored that day.

I believe that there is no initial purpose to life for everyone.  We just came here as a result of two other people so we have no jurisdiction over that.  The parents may have wanted to keep the family name alive but we didn't decide to be born.  There is no point of life other than just trying to live and make the best out of your life as you can.  If that happens to intertwine with someone else's life and enhances theirs then more power to them.
