@Abby_girl
I starting thinking very seriously about transitioning while I was in college when I was in my 20's.   I always had a very slight build, no bulk, no muscle, only 5'4" or perhaps 5'5" if I fluffed up my longish blonde hair... I had a soft girly looking face and a voice to match.  That made be the subject of crude and mean jokes and endless pranks from all of my male classmates, especially in gym class... and also some not so nice comments from some of the girls too.

All of that, the way I looked and sounded worked in my favor when I started to transition in my early 30's...  I found that I could pass fairly well even before I started HRT in March of 2015 when had just turned 35.  The HRT did it's Magic and a little more that a year and a half later I went full-time.  It has been an exciting ride for sure...

I had my first appointment with my gender therapist on my 30th birthday (not intentionally, that's just when he had an appointment available), so I guess I technically started in my 30s, but I had been seriously thinking about it for ten years prior.

If you want to transition, being in yours 30s doesn't really seem to be a hindrance.  There's certainly nothing wrong with transitioning at a younger or older age, but it's a good balance in your 30s, in my very biased opinion.

I was the exact opposite when I started my transition at 35; I was 6 ft. tall (I still am), extremely muscular weighing ~ 220 lbs. with ~ 6% body fat, close cropped hair, a Clingon- forehead, chiseled jaw, and a very deep voice. And 20 years later with 13 consecutive years of HRT, full FFS, muscle atrophy (my weight is ~ 168 lbs.), Breast Augmentation, being very fortunate to have great hair, and a lot of voice work; I'm happy with what I have accomplished, and I'm happy being me.😊

Thanks for the compliment😊
My skin started changing within several months after starting HRT; breast development started within the first month with a lot of tenderness. Voice training is challenging, but it is doable, it just takes a lot of practice, patience, and determination.

Did you see a coach? seems daunting to learn all by oneself!

My skin started pretty soon after starting HRT, within a month or two.

As for voice, a coach is a huge help especially at first.

Awe thanks everyone! I hope HRT will help with the rest! It's rough trying to learn to be a woman with all the hair and makeup skills and also mannerisms and walking and such...especially after being a guy for 33 years trying to be as masculine as possible... people even my male family members always said things like you got a little sugar in your tank or you need to be around more men... I guess that kind of were subtle signs that I was a bit different.

I started HRT on my 31st birthday, I just turned 32 last week and the last year has been one of my best ones yet! I always knew something was up with me and transitioning was always on the back of my mind, but I didn't really start considering it a real possibility until I was 27. Then half way into my 30th year I realized that it was absolutely what I needed to do and I started coming out to people :)

I just turned 30 this month. For me I really didn't know what I wanted to do - but I've moved out on my own recently which gives me a lot more freedom to be me. I don't have to hide who I am and lounge around in pink pjs and not feel judged. I'm hoping to start HRT before the end of the summer but it's been frustrating.

I started at 43 and the results have been far beyond anything I expected. :) Skin changes came first and they were quite fast. Breast growth kicked in within 2-3 weeks of hrt (it was happening anyway just slower), and hasn't stopped... pain for the last 8 months and the changes I've seen this year are well I had to change all my ID's at four months in because they no longer matched.

Im 36 and have only just recently started to accept who and what I am. I am not sure if I will go for HRT, but its good to know that if I do then I can have good results but the looks of those that are here now.

The voice thing, I have been...working on for about a week now. I have always been able to do voices (like stitch or meatwad) so I figured that this should come easy....nope...

However I am pleased to report I can now do a passable winnie the pooh for like 5 minutes  :-\

@MissyMay2.0 you are awesome!

Hi Abby,

I'm 37 and only recently accepted myself as transgender.  Hopefully soon I'll start HRT and I'm actually looking forward to it.  My therapist is getting the paperwork started so that I can finally be on the right fuel instead of continuing to live on the wrong one.  Don't let anyone tell you you're too old to transition if that's what you want to do.  Lots of girls (and guys) began much later in life than ourselves, so it's never too late.

Hugs!!!

When I first started transitioning there was a gal named Melanie Phillips who had a really good Website, and she suggested using a cartoon voice that had a high falsetto as a way to warm up and adjust your pitch, and I found that to be really helpful.

I'm 32 and have been poppin the boob skittles for a little over a month now. My skin has gotten significantly softer and my hair has gotten slightly lighter. A lot of my body changes have more involved losing instead of gaining. Haven't hardly felt anything with the boobs except my nips are erect all the time. I've lost 40lbs since Christmas with some stalls in between. I still have about 60 to go for my original goal weight of 200. I started at 310 btw. But I know that a lot of my loss since hrt has been muscle. Some in my back and chest and a little in my face already. The most has been in my legs and man region so far though.

I am 33 Years old and I am curious of some ladies stories that started around my age?

I had closeted crossdressing experiences in my teens, 20s, and most signficantly in my 30s where I also tried herbal hormones with a desire for breast growth that I could both have yet hide as needed (i.e., when going out and at work etc.). I sort of got my wish there... but I was so so closeted then (1990s... I'm in my 50s now) and was disconnected from any community, and there was no way I'd go to therapy and discuss things because I felt that would absolutely mean I might immediately be diagnosed as needing SRS which I'd had some strong urges to have but was also like "no way I cannot do that because everyone will laugh, deride, reject me and life will basically be over as I know it." etc. ...

How frightened naive I was then!! Way overthinking things ... it got so close yet no real breakthrough. I boxed and unboxed clothes/makeup up several times over a period of a decade or so.

Finally around 2012ish things started to crop up again but this time I was in a better way to explore and (excitedly) seek therapy etc. I also think either the online resources were better and/or I was less fearful about using them. (I utilized susans.org for a long while without having an account... getting an account was a huge deal etc.)

Whenever one transitions, I feel people tend to think it may be too late, or if not that, that they might have missed "the best." This can lead to the sunk costs (http://www.genderpsychology.org/psychology/sunkcost.html) thing which afflicted me to some extent.

If you're transitioning in your 30s, you are 30 years very young and lucky. Really at any age, but I feel, based on what I've seen of so many great examples of healthy positive transition, that the 30s are a wonderful time to start. Again, any time is, but if you're in your 30s, it's really a great time to explore, especially if you're single (which I was then) and you've got a job or are otherwise past youthful things where you don't budget or plan well... healthy transitioning requires responsibility.

When I think back to where I was at in my 30s... I really should have explored more etc. I missed a ship there... it's fine because I caught a fairly decent one in my late 40s and am very grateful.

Best of luck with everything!

Ashley

There you have it ladies. Two different distinct body types, heights, and paths. However both based on their testimony and lovely avatar conveys a successful transition, beautiful I might add. I am 33, just started my journey to womanhood. Great thread btw because the 30's group don't get much representation as far as coming out and starting their journey. It's better to live a fulfilled half life, than a unfulfilled whole life.

Currently I am 31, but I have wanted to transition since I was about my earlier 20's. Depression, lack of info on how to transition, and money kept me from it.

But now I am doing well with my mental health, and I have the info and some money saved up. Hoping to have a little more and then find a way to start.

I don't think there is a "right" age to start the process of transitioning. I feel hen you're ready, you're ready. No matter how old you are.

I should be done by now, but there are so many obstacles to overcome. I am not foreseeing any problems now.

Hi Abby,                    29 July 2018

I've said this many times: It's never too late to transition unless you wait until they are shoveling dirt onto your face..

My transition was started at 17...... years past my second 30 year orbit of the sun by Space Ship  Earth.

I'm the oldest I have ever been and the youngest I will ever be. Enjoy your cruise.

Best Always, Love,
Christine
