"To find out how the photographs were taken, and in what circumstances, I phoned up a former assistant of his, a delightful New York transvestite called Ming Vauze, one of those frighteningly noisy characters with whom Andy liked to surround himself to disguise his loneliness. Ming served at the master's feet in the crucial years of 1982-85 as Andy's driver and all-purpose helper. If you want to visualise him, check him out on YouTube belting out a gloriously shaky version of Freda Payne's Band of Gold. These days, Ming calls himself by his original name of Benjamin Liu, but his throaty transsexual laugh could still derail a Manhattan freight train, and his vivid memories of Andy are still warmed by huge amounts of sisterly love."
