I have decided not to fully transistion due to several factors, my age 74, 50 year marriage and I am stuck somewhere between my male self and female self. I have dropped my current therapist because she said she regretted giving me a letter advocating hormone therapy after I told her about my decision to not fully transition. Her attitude was only someone planning a full transistion should take hormones. I currently am taking half dosage of estrodol which helps me keep the dysphoria under control. I have always been on the slightly feminine side so small changes in my physical self come as no surpprise to those who know me. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can relate to my situation.
That is fairly ridiculous gatekeeping!

Ann,
I think that each person should make informed decisions about transitioning, and this is at all times along the transition journey. There is nothing wrong with changing your mind and limiting your transition.
I do wish you well. :)

Ann,
This is ridiculous. Low dose hrt is likely needed to keep your dysphoria under control. This sort of gatekeeper comment is just so poor. Hrt is not only prescribed for those who intend a full binary transition

I agree with the other comments here. My primary care talked to me about that as a option. She says that isn't all that uncommon. I think that whatever choice you make is perfectly valid.
I am sorry that you have had to live this long with the dysphoria. I hope the measures you are taking work well for you.

Ann45, I am a year older than you, but started a slow drift into transition about 16 years ago. A little while ago I decided I want to finish it as long as I still can live a life as a woman, and talked to my therapist, and she said that I am mentally so much a woman already that she will help with all she can do to get my body into it, too!
For me getting all the way is the goal, including bottom surgery.
But everybody is different, and everybody has to find their own path. You therapist seems not to understand that the main goal is to make you happy and that there is not need to follow their ideology of what transition has to be.
You might want to look for a new therapist who is willing to help you to be happy!
Good luck!

Here's what Rainbow Health, in Toronto, has to say:
QuoteWhen hormones are chosen as part of a care plan, some
clients may seek maximum feminization/masculinization,
while others experience relief with a more androgynous
appearance. Hormone therapy may also provide
significant relief for clients who do not wish to make
a social gender role transition or are unable to do so.
So, they don't worry about whether a person transitions or not, only that hormones help them.

Thankyou. Your comments support what I feel inside. I will look for another therapist. I will keep in touch.
