Title: Hardcoded
Post by: Lunarite on February 05, 2019, 03:30:22 PM
Rock Paper Shotgun featured a (NSFW) trans-focussed game a couple of months ago, thought maybe someone here might be interested:

Let's be clear, the game is outright smut, but I found the article itself an interesting read, and you can read that without fear of naughty pictures onscreen.
Gender & sex as told through robotic bodies is a fair thing to explore, and I could see it as a decent thing to be done in a rather more subtle way too.

It reminds me of another RPS article from a couple of years ago about the most recent Deus Ex:
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/06/08/deus-ex-mankind-divided-breach-preview/
There's a fairly small comment in there:
QuoteLess frivolously, does Jensen actually have genitals these days (the cutscene camera refrains from filling in the picture) and what are the implications of that, exactly? Deus Ex's lead identifies as male, but in all those years as the owner of a partly robotic, highly customisable body, hasn't he ever thought twice? Is gender a matter of the body you inhabit, anyway?
And, while it made the comments section a trainwreck, it made me think quite a bit. Cybernetic body parts are a staple of quite a bit of cyberpunk and adjacent fiction, but never has anything I've read/watched/played done a bit of exploration into implications for the below-the-belt stuff. I'm sure there's plenty of erotica which covers that, but I think it would be worthy as an actual serious topic - though usually anything about sex is tarred with that brush.

Anyway, Hardcoded. There's a demo available. I played it. It's not really for me, but I could see the appeal for some people - I don't begrudge anyone their smut! Personally, I think that the existence of such things for/by those of us in the margins should be celebrated, even if we don't talk explicitly about it.
The game is pornographic (by design), but I actually found the 'voice' behind it interesting too. Ironically, despite the sex being the main point of the game, I think I'd quite like to play something by the same author that isn't all explicit and sex-scene-y, and going a little deeper (no pun intended) on some of the talk-y stuff.
(This isn't me being all "look at me; I'm so pure" / "I read it for the articles" - I have Ladykiller in a Bind in my queue, and I'm looking forward to it)

Maybe you'll appreciate it, for one reason or another, though I'd recommend checking out the article anyway.

(Really sounds like I'm shilling for RPS! I'm not! I just happen to read it a lot and find some of their articles have an interesting and usually sympathetic take on things! I'm doing it again! Argh!)

(Mods, I hope this is OK)
