Title: Hair loss and regrowth
Post by: Ray123 on May 05, 2019, 01:26:00 AM
I'm 30 years old and have a pretty bad widows peak going on. I've been taking vitamins and using biotin shampoo. I like to think it's working, but I can't tell.

This has cause some serious low self esteem in me. It grows fast but it's fine and I always think the widows peak is escalating. I really wish I had long thick hair. I now HRT isn't a miracle regimen, but I feel like it's my last chance.

Are you saying that you are thinking of starting HRT just for hair growth? Are you wanting to transition or solely want HRT just for hair growth?

If its just for hair growth at 30 there are other options out there, you should go get a consultation with a expert in hair loss and the procedures that may be available to you. When it comes to hair the sooner the better.

Ray 123,

From your profile, I cannot determine if transition is for you. HRT causes many changes not just hair restoration.

Hair loss is caused by a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone. This hormone is many times more powerful than just plain Testosterone. It is possible to take a small dose of a DHT blocker called Finasteride that will stop the loss of hair, in many cases. The trade name of this low dose Finasteride is Propecia.

In the US, Propecia is not usually covered by health insurance, but a higher dose for prostate issues is covered. Treating a prostate is medically necessary, but treating hair loss is cosmetic. Because of this, many men get the high dose and split the tablet into smaller sizes. There are issues with doing this. The medication can cause birth defects to the unborn child of a pregnant woman. Even trace amounts of the powder can have a bad effect. Tablets are usually coated to prevent this and when the tablet is split into smaller doses, the powder is exposed to the environment. Another issue is that the daily dose will never be accurate, but will average out over a few days if you take each tablet part daily for consecutive days.

On the other hand, if MTF transition is in your future, you do not need to split a tablet.

The side effects of Finasteride are listed on many internet sites, but the most troublesome is the loss of sexual libido. This does not happen to all men, but it does happen to a significant number of men. How Finasteride effects a FTM person is not clearly defined, but I would expect it to be the same as any other man.

One more thing. There are other ways of dealing with hair loss besides HRT. These range from Minoxidil 5% solution to a good quality baseball cap.  :D  The choice is yours. I am sure you can find a treatment that works for you.

Not at all. My hair is just one of many factors for transitioning. I just wanted to know if any of you have had success with hair regrowth from being on HRT.

I can attest to that!  I took the high dose of Finasteride  for about 6 years.  Libido is only a faint memory for me!

I don't need to take it anymore, but I don't think that my libido will ever come back?

Ray,
This is a very understandable thing. However, there is hairline restoration treatment(?) (Unsure of actual name), which I believe can be done during ffs (facial feminization surgery)

Sprio helped my hairline. I decided at 6 months of HRT, Spironolactone and E patches, and added LLLT therapy. So far so good :)

Best wishes.
