Title: Changing my name?
Post by: Ray123 on May 05, 2019, 12:24:31 PM
I've been thinking really hard about what I'd do with my name if I end up transitioning. My given name is Ray. My Father named me after his best friend who passed away before I was born.

I was thinking I could alter my name. Like to Raye or Rey. What do you guys think?

@Ray123
Dear Ray:
Any of the alternative names that you suggested for yourself sound really good, BUT what you decide about your name is, of course, entirely your decision that you will want to be happy with.

If you wish to change your member name here on Susan's Place and the Forums you can go to the following LINK for instructions:

Thank you for sharing......
Best wishes to you.

The name you choose needs to be something you love and will be happy not just calling yourself, but also happy hearing others call you.

You may want to consider the "mistake" I made, though. While I'm happy with "Stephanie," and it's appropriate for my age, many people call me "Steph." That's fine, too, but it's very close to "Steve," which is who I used to be known as.

The problem? The names are so close that the new one doesn't trigger the recognition in certain people that they should be using different pronouns. All of my neighbors picked right up on the name, but some of them can't seem to get the pronouns right. "Steve" and "Steph" are a little different, but "Ray" and "Rey" are probably pronounced exactly alike. If you want people to think of you differently it could become a problem.

That said, you need to do what makes you happiest! Good luck!

Stephanie

I agree with Stephanie.

My chosen name is Pierre. It is close to my birth name but yet different. First two letters are the same.

Chose a name that feels right in you. Try out different names, tell people to say your name to you. Ray, Rei, Rey, they all sound the same. If you like your given name and have no dysphoria, you can try to change a letter. See how it feels when people say your name. But as Stephanie said, changing pronounce is harder for some people if they don't see any differance in your name.

Saying out loud they all sound the same.

Try before you chose.
