The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) [official website] Friday issued a final rule [text; DHS backgrounder] establishing new minimum standards [press release] for state-issued identification cards under the Real ID Act [PDF text; JURIST news archive]. DHS will phase in the heightened requirements between 2011 and 2017.
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt,
wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
brüderlich zusammenhält.
von der Maas bis an die Memel,
von der Etsch bis an den Belt,
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt!
I don't need to worry about it any time soon. People born before 1964 will be exempt until 2017.
I don't need to worry then either born 1944.

Well I never had to worry about the Nazi's because, in the beginning, they were not coming for me. "Just a second, someone's knocking on the door." Don't kid yourself.
I wonder what they are going to do with all the people who can't come up with the proper documentation? There are many more in this group than just undocumented aliens.
It's a nightmare. I hope that we defeat this thing.

The funny thing is they federal government refuses to enforce the law now on undocumented people, what good is a national ID?

Vy yees mine Furher! -I mean, My President... Ve could breed ahnimals! Ahnd they could be slaauhtered....
I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
The only change this brings to the California process is that the photo would be taken first not last.

I said it two years ago on this thread:

and some of you didn't think it was going to turn into such a nightmare. Well, it is.

Well, those people will be treated as second class citizens. I wouldn't be surprised that eventually they will be given a mark similar to that used in concentration camps? IMO, we must repeal this Act, for it isn't a good thing for anyone trans, non-trans, etc; it will violate the privacy of too many Americans. I am not sure if stealth will even be possible if this goes into effect...it will be a real nightmare...

The only part of this I was really worried about was the RFID chips being put on them (they are on passports already) Other than that, what's the deal? The only change in the way Calif will deal with it is that they will take the pictures first. Other than that, all other aspects of the law were already part of a cal state id. Its states, particularly in the South, that don't check anything that its going to apply to.
If you have a passport, or security clearance all this in formation is in the federal hands already. I was worried about a national ID (though I'm sure that's not a dead letter yet) most of this is to make all the states have some sort of minimal standard for ID.
Amerika is headed to a surveillance society. I believe that J.Edgar Hoover would have done these things if the technology had been present. It doesn't matter who is President. With the ability of all levels of the private and public sector to monitor us for both political intrusions and commercial marketing , we do not need a cult of personality. This system will take, and it already has, a life of its own. A Hitler or a Stalin is a relic of the past. This PC that your reading this on is the Herr Direktor.
What's the big deal? Your ID will be linked to your financial records, work records, driving history, travel history.....
Do I need say more? Ya wan de dude at duh door to see ya histry when ya walk thru tha doah fah da movie? Yea... he makes minimum wage. Hmmm... that looks like a rich lady, let me just write down her credit card number. Won't happen you say? Remember when it was unthinkable that the government would tap your telephone... you don't? Yes, it used to be like that. They used to need real search warrants. Not any more. The government is now reading postal mail, data mining financial records, performing illegal searches for whatever reason they want (read this... they are not even obeying the Patriot Act... this stuff was for terrorists but they have convicted more drug dealers with these searches than you'd care to believe) and many other agregious acts.
A few months ago, I was listening to a program on PBS concerning the problems with just coming up with a picture ID for voting. It sounds simple. But it AIN'T. There are many people here in this country legally who do not have photo ID. Implementation of this "simple" requirement (forget Real ID) would cost hundreds of millions.

I think its just that americans are used to living as pseudo-libertarians, except
when it suits them. They obviously don't know that in UK, if they scratch their
balls its filmed by 20 cameras. Strangely enough, I don't think the UK is
a dictactorish yet.
There are a lot of areas of major cities that have been ravaged by drugs. To consider major dealers terrorists is not a stretch, sad though it is to admit that.
And without the readers, and with no RFID chip he ain't gonna be reading anything. And I'm betting your DL has most of this information on it already, or its tied into a system that has it.
That our government is out of control, and has been, is true.
QuoteAnd I'm betting your DL has most of this information on it already, or its tied into a system that has it.
The truth is that the government information system is in disarray. I had a small accident in CA and live in another state. They could not find my DL or my tags in any computer files even though I am perfectly legal and have current papers and ID.

FYI, California DMV's DLs were a model for what Real ID should accomplish and how it should be accomplished. Cal-DMV feels that the CAL DL is already compliant with the final rules, though they will go over the rules with a fine toothed comb just to be certain.
And I've been told by a credible source that the appearance of myself and Johanna Rassmussen at the Real ID Town Hall sent a shockwave through the DHS and the state DMVs that were grappling with the implementation of Real ID. Sadly, It's left to each state to decide how to deal with the issue of transgenders and gender markers. But they had to address the issue...

Then there is proof that the system has and will fail. Back to the drawing board.

Indeed, the IDs in all of Europe give the authorities more data about the individual than anything in the US at this point. There's already more freedom in the EU than there is in the US.
