After months of legal proceedings, Tara McGovern, a 45-year-old transgender musician and activist, was acquitted of charges stemming from their involvement in a protest on the University of Iowa campus. The protest took place last fall against a speaker known for opposing gender-affirming care for minors.

McGovern, who uses they/them pronouns, argued that the charges were unconstitutional and an attempt to silence voices of dissent. They emphasized that their participation in the protest did not break the law, a stance supported by police body-camera footage presented as evidence during the trial.

The trial also highlighted the selective enforcement of laws against protestors. McGovern was one of only seven individuals arrested, and this selection was made by the University of Iowa Police Department a month after the protest took place.

The trial's result was a validation for McGovern and their backers, asserting that the freedom to protest should be respected, even in a difficult legal climate.
