Being a musician myself I wondered how many musicians are transsexual? Here's a few really cool one's I've found so far:
http://annah.rightsideout.net/
http://www.namolibrennet.com/
http://www.danabaitz.com/
Wendy Carlos is pretty amazing!
My friend Jessica Xavier is really cool! We played a few gigs together some years ago.
Dana Israel, I haven't heard her CD, but she is pretty famous
Can we open this up to transgender musicians? If so, there's other people I would add...
y2g
PS, I'm also a musician, but it'd be pretty egotistical to say I rock, so someone else will have to say it ;D ;)
Hey Berliegh,
Great post!!! I got to meet Annah Moore last night @ my first TG Harmony Support Group meeting and she is a wonderful person!!! And she totally rock's!!!
Julia Serano was in an indie pop band called bitsize. She is not only the most recognized feminist writer who is trans, she was also in a cool band!
Hey thanks, Berliegh. I know this is an olllld post but I just wanted to say that I'm still around and still rockin'. In fact, my current band, The Flaming Queens, is seriously tearing up Arizona right now. Check us out: https://www.facebook.com/theflamingqueens

Laura Jane Grace of Against Me is trans-that's a pretty big one. She's amazing; she came out around the same time I did, and it heped me a lot. If you're into political punk-check them out!
Antony and the Johnsons are headlined by a trans person; Antony is non-binary, I believe. Hands down one of my favorite musicians in the world, gender aside. Beautiful, artistic compositions...
Others worth mentioing are Our Lady J, Mina Kaputo, Tonya Brown, Pete Burns, Ryan Casata-just realizing I know a lot about this. Hope this helps...
Anna Varney from Sopor Aeternus:

The Toilet Boys were fronted by Miss Guy but I'm not sure if she identified as transgendered or not. When I saw them live she said something about being "one of those scary ->-bleeped-<-s you hear about." They kicked much arse live.
There's the very famous Jayne County who was the first trans-punk singer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayne_County
I love Laura Jane Grace.
I plan on being the first (known) transgendered black metal musician. >:-)

I've entertained the thought of being a transgender rapper.

Yeah, I know a few other musicians where I thought they might have been trans/androgynous/non binary based upon the life they led and comments they made. A good example is Nico, (also partly known from working with the Velvet underground). She called herself Nico, which in itself is a male name, and in some rare interview she said: "The only regret I have, is that I was born female". She also sings in a really low voice. If she was trans, we will never know because she died too early. It's just a hunch, as she didn't really felt being female and suffered massive depressions. RIP 1938 – 1988

Not rock so much but I think still worth mentioning
Laura Jane Grace is obviously awesome, as a big fan of Against Me! it was so inspiring when she came out. Mina Caputo is another one I would recomend checking out.

I was never a LoA fan so I hadn't known Mina had transitioned until seeing this thread. I saw a few vids on FB and reminded myself why I don't read the comment section there.
Life of Agony... Mina Caputo?! Holy crap.
I don't know her, but she was briefly replaced by my old friend Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe) as lead singer in LoA.
Now I completely understand why the band was called Life of Agony in the first place! If that wasn't a reference to gender dysphoria...
Mind officially blown.

That was my reaction. Now songs like "Daddy's Little Girl" make sense.
Isley Reust of Spectacular Spectacular.
Though strange to think of someone younger than myself this way, she is my current personal hero. I don't ever have many heroes in my life though.
My wife dug up an old picture of me, so I thought I'd share it as an avatar.
I can't believe how girly I looked back then!

Mina Caputo was one of the openers for Laura Jane Grace when I went to hear her in Boston last summer. Both were amazing!

Marissa is awesome, granted I've never met her in person but she changed my life substantially for the better. We were both members of a forum centered around a certain musician quite a few years back and she was openly trans on it while I at the time was in denial and hoping I wasn't trans. We shared a lot in common, not just being trans and events around that, but in similar interests as well as personal issues. Eventually I couldn't suppress the fact I was probably trans and my current state of denial was killing me, so I sent her a message along the lines of "Hi Marissa, I think I have a problem and I wanted to talk to you about it since we seem to share it among other things, ect, ect" and we talked and yeah, the end result was coming to terms wit the transness. She was the first person I ever talked to about being trans and she objectively made my life better.

Depends on if you or me get there first. ;)
As for the thread.... I'll nominate Raine von Kiska of the Gravesiders.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RxtUtfx0B0
Interestingly enough, she was a member of the death metal band, Brutality, back in days of yore (pre-transition)....
So I am kind of surprised that no one has mentioned "Pearl Thompson" Guitarist from the band " The Cure" He was also led Zeppeling guitarist for awhile in the 90s. Pearl quit The Cure in 2011 And then transitioned into Pearl Thompson. She still plays out but has no affiliation with any one band.

WTF!!? OK, I hadn't heard this. I've seen her play three times, once with The Cure and twice with Plant/Page. I actually used to do some bass tech work for Plant/Page when she was a member of that band. Oddly enough, she was replaced in The Cure by my old friend Reeves Gabrels. So I know two people now who replaced transwomen in bands. Go figure... What a strange world!

That's right!! I had forgotten about Pearl. I read about her last year.

I just saw Reeves/ The Cure play at Riotfest in Denver. He is an Amazing guitarist but lacks the class and Finesse that Porl/Pearl has. Both have quite the impressive resume though

already been mentioned on here a couple times but Laura Jane grace of against me is a true inspiration, and having already liked their music before she transitioned it just made me like it even more! even if you're not into punk rock the lyrics speak to all of us and how we have felt one time or another throughout our loves

I thought about Genesis but they don't really consider themselves to be trans. Quite an interesting history there but not someone easily labeled.

Agreed...
Jethro Tull wasn't my cup of tea but they always had a strong following coming from near where I live and grew up.They had a TS regular session musician who played on many albums and I think a few live shows before transition

Dee (formerly David) Palmer. She was born with ambiguous genitalia and had surgery as a child to "correct" them. Her dysphoria got out of control once her wife died so she transitioned.

Laura Jane Grace , she is absolutely amazing and I loved her album about being trans (actually all her albums have songs about being trans she said)! She also did a little mini series on being transgender you can check out here --> http://on.aol.com/video/true-trans-s1-e1---growing-up-518451031
Albuquerque and Santa Fe we have a few bands. A Band Named Sue the male vocalist is a trans guy. (There is another Band Named Sue not in ABQ). There are three other groups with trans folks but I don't know if they are "out" as trans. All of the groups they are trans masculine or non-binary most of them have not made medical transitions.

Thank you. Sadly, I haven't played in over two years now. I'd really like to find someone to collaborate with who is a creative songwriter and sings well; particularly a soprano or mezzo-soprano voice. I can manage it, myself, but I'd rather it be someone whose voice is already there naturally. I want to create a sort of folky sound with piano, acoustic guitar, some cultural instruments like mandolin and dulcimer, and violin. It would have more of a dark/melancholic feel with introspective and abstract lyrics. Finding someone interested in doing that is difficult when you live in the South.

That's one of the most avant-garde pieces of music and video I've ever seen. I had heard of Sopor Aeturnus before but that's the first time I've seen any of their work.
Another vote for LJG :)
Here's 37 more for the list. Some of them have been mentioned here many times but some are new. I haven't had a chance to listen to all the songs yet but there should be something for everyone.
