Title: Do you think Kamala Harris could actually change things for us?
Post by: CosmicJoke on November 05, 2024, 10:01:41 AM
Hi everyone. Personally I am not political at all. I am not a registered voter. My parents and brother have voted for Harris however.

Kamala does sound to me like the first candidate who might actually change things for transgender people. She could potentially give us all the rights that gay people or cisgender people would have for example.

This does sound like a very high stakes election for our community. If Trump gets in he would definitely set us back 60 some years.

This is just what I'm observing but do you think if Kamala gets in office she may actually do something about transgender issues?

Honestly no I don't think so. Unless she gets a strong majority in both houses, she won't be able to do much of substance.Even if she does get a strong majority she will be focused on other things first like abortion rights and possibly trying to balance out the Supreme Court more.

My belief now is that we don't vote for the best choice but more the least worse.

I don't know that Harris will be able to make things better. It sounds like the House and Senate will be split, with the House still in Republican control by a slim majority, and the Senate either split or with a one vote Republican majority. Without the help of the House and the Senate, she will be somewhat limited. However, I doubt she will make things worse. In my case, I voted for the person who I think will cause the least harm to our community. I hope Harris and Walz do a great job.

Love always -- Jess

We focus on presidential elections, but it isn't presidents who change things for the people, and especially for minorities. Changes come from the Legislative and Judicial branches of government, and the players there are around for a lot longer than presidents. Change comes with the enlightenment of society.

So no, I don't think Harris will be able to enact much change. But if she wins, it does send a message of hope.

Hugs, Devlyn

I don't know if she will substantially change anything for us, but I voted for her today because of the likelihood that having her in the role of President would prevent a lot of bad things for us.

Exactly this.

Which is why I  bracing for a backlash from the right if Harris wins. When Biden lost in 2020, the Republicans went full throttle on anti-trans bills. They went from around like 100-ish bills per year to over 600 per year. And if their dead horse loses the race again, they'll take things even further to try to get some retribution on America for not voting for their dead horse.

Last night's election results show that the  majority of the American people as indicated
with their decisive "popular vote" and with the "Electoral College" landslides in favor
of Trump were not in agreement with what Harris was promoting.    It was not even close....

I have had a long-standing belief that 90% of the world's population are morons. (Susan's Members excluded, of course.)

I have yet to see evidence to the contrary.

Unfortunately, Harris was a lame candidate.  She got started too late and riding Biden's coat tails was not a strong platform.

My daughter (university senior year student) is really worried about the future under Trump.  Economically, I'm sure that tariffs aren't the answer either.  We, as a nation and as a people, can't continue to borrow at this rate.  Giving billions of our borrowed money away across the world.  My son (29 years old grad student) called me last night really in a state of fear about Trump supporters, very worried about the violence and protecting his family and property since he and his wife are Democrats with many LGBTQ+ friends.  He wanted to borrow a hand gun, expecting riots against Kamala supporters in his neighborhood if Harris won the election.  I talked him through it, but I am saddened that the rowdy yobo Donald supporters could frighten a usually calm, collected and considered man to this point.  He cited the threatening behaviors around the country by YOBOs assaulting Harris supporters in TX, as well as vociferant D.T. supporters in his corporate environment, in his own office!  There was more of the same, but you get the point.

Deportations?  How are they gonna accomplish that?  Really.

I'm of the opinion that the prosperity of the 50's and 60's gave way to malaise in the 70's, optimism of the 80's, upheavals in the 90's and the war's of the 2000's.  We are back to the malaise of the 30's and 70's.  It's all cyclic.

Politics is almost always distasteful.  Getting along is hard to do when there is disparity and class warfare.  There needs to be competition, but not at the cost of civility and cooperation.
