Will Trump curb transgender rights? After election, community prepares for worst

Story by Marc Ramirez (9 Nov 2024)

With Donald Trump's re-election as president, longtime LGBTQ advocate Cathy Renna has heard from people in the U.S. transgender community panicked about job security or wondering whether they might need to scrub their social media presence to avoid becoming targets of hate.

Trump made gender identity issues a focal point of his campaign, targeting transgender rights in a barrage of TV advertising, speeches and campaign rallies and indicating that elimination of those rights would be among the initial priorities of his term.

"There's a tremendous amount of apprehension and fear," said Renna, communications director for the National LGBTQ Task Force. "It's not going to be like his first administration. He has a different group of people around him and he's prepared to do significant damage to our democracy – and to the LGBTQ community."

"They definitely want to deliver on the promises they were making," said Isa Noyola, a trans Latina who serves as deputy director of the Transgender Law Center, a national civil rights organization based in Oakland, California. "They will go in with a lot of precision and effort to deliver for their base. They know the inner workings of the bureaucracy enough to now be very targeted, and they're not wasting time. The attacks are going to come swiftly."

This should act as a warning -- get your documents changed as soon as possible. We have no idea what may be coming, but it is most likely going to be bad news for our community.

Love always -- Jess

I had my trans group meeting last night and as many this was the topic of conversation. The leader felt the first would be a repeal of prop. 13.Then a ban on trans in the military, as well as sports, bathroom bans in schools, and a possible halt to gender marker changes on documents .
One poor girl of 21 years old said it wasn't worth living if this was the way it would be. We all tried to console her but as I left the meeting she said "Good by" as if we would never talk again.
So many are fearful of the worst and are considering extreme measures when we have to just take a wait and see attitude rather than than doing something detrimental to ourselves. As an LGBTQ+ community we are here to stay and we need to help each other conquer our fears.  We will survive!!

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

There should be no speculating on what he will do. It is all written and explained on his website under what he calls Agenda 47.

On a side note, I checked the laws governing asylum in Canada. If you are coming from the US, you will be returned to the US and are not eligible for asylum in Canada. Good to know.

I could move to Mexico, build an Agave Ranch, and make my own tequila.  ;D

Yes this! The political landscape in the U.S. is constantly shifting, with power frequently changing hands between parties. Achieving a fixed state of balance is difficult—maybe even impossible. However, time brings change, and in the next election cycle, we can hope that candidates from both parties will offer more balanced solutions.
