The Ohio Senate on Wednesday greenlit a measure that would ban transgender students from using locker rooms and bathrooms associated with their gender identities.
Senate Bill 104, passed 24-7 on a party-line vote.
If signed into law by the state's GOP governor, the Republican-backed legislation would require primary and secondary schools, as well as institutions of higher education, to designate separate bathrooms and changing areas for males or females based on gender assigned at or near birth. Multi-gendered facilities would be prohibited.
The ban would not apply to school employees, people with disabilities and children under 10 who need assistance from a family member or guardian, according to the legislation. Family restrooms and single-occupancy facilities are also permitted.
The bill, titled the "Protect All Students Act," would amend Ohio's existing college credit program for high school students. It is now awaiting approval from Republican Gov. Mike DeWine.
DeWine is inclined to sign it but will conduct a legal review first, the Associated Press reported. "We have no new comment," DeWine spokesperson Dan Tierney told CNN on Thursday. "While the bill has passed, it has not been delivered to our office yet for signature."
LGBTQ advocates have for years worked to combat similar "bathroom bills," blasting them as an unnecessary and harmful attack on transgender students' humanity.

Coed bathrooms are not generally wanted, for sure.
However true MTFs should be treated as any other women and should be able to use the female restroom or a single person restroom.
Similar logic for true FTMs applies to male restroom use.
Now if a guy says he is transgender just so he can be in the female bathroom and is not really transgender that is weird and wrong. No weirdos please!
Transgender people make up less than 1% of the population.
I would guess that 1% probably also describes the number of creeps who hang out in bathrooms to peek at someone peeing behind the closed door of a stall. Most people enter a bathroom for reasons other than voyeurism. I know of several women who have used the men's room because the line outside the women's room was too long. No arrests were made. No complaints. No one got upset. When you gotta go, you gotta go and most people understand that.
Politicians want you to believe that any "man" who enters a women's bathroom is there for nefarious purposes. I would be willing to bet that the number of men who have assaulted a woman in a bathroom is less than 1%.
I would suggest that we just do away with sex/gender markers totally. Other than for medical tests and treatment, they serve no purpose except to segregate people into little boxes with labels.
If anyone is in any room for purposes other than using or cleaning the facilities as intended, that person (male, female, or other) should be confronted and told to leave. They have no business there.
It's just another example of society portraying women as weak, vulnerable, and inferior to men. But I have two ex-sisters-in-law who would have no problem bouncing a creep off the premises. My dad describes them as "big enough to go bear hunting... with a stick." Many women are not weak or vulnerable.

Very well said. And I would go further and say most women are not weak or vulnerable. It's only a patriarchal society treating women as wallflowers and precious gems that need to be isolated from everything which has led to this. As someone ex-military, one of my unarmed combat instructors was a tiny woman (comparatively). I towered over her and she probably weighed 120lbs soaking wet. But she had me yelping like a 10 day old puppy within like 5 minutes. It's not about how strong you are, it's about how you use it. And men can be just as vulnerable as women if they don't know how to defend themselves properly. No matter how big you are or aren't.
This is not going to stop the thing they think it's going to stop. Most guys who are creepy enough to go into female bathrooms for what this is trying to avoid, don't bother making the effort to pretend to be trans. It's persecution via smokescreen.
