Trump and LGBTQ+ Rights: Will the Next President Undo Decades of Progress?

Opinion by Sabra Katz-Wise (5 Dec 2024)

Scared, worried, anxious, numb, fearful, angry, disappointed, devastated, terrified. Those were the words I kept hearing – and feeling. In the weeks after Election Day, I was in constant contact with my fellow LGBTQ+ Americans. In listening sessions at work, gatherings in our neighborhood, one-on-one coffee dates and text threads with family and friends, we all shared our fears for what comes next.

Donald Trump's victory has terrified LGBTQ+ families like mine. The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ+ youth, said outreach to the organization increased by nearly 700% on the day after the election, compared to prior weeks. The Rainbow Youth Project, another LGBTQ+ advocacy group, told ABC News that while it typically fields 800 crisis calls a month, it received 5,460 calls in the 10 days around the election.

Meanwhile, LGBTQ+ parents I know are busy starting co-parent adoption paperwork, doing estate planning and updating legal documents to protect themselves and their children from the anti-LGBTQ+ agenda that Trump and his allies have foreshadowed. Project 2025, a radical blueprint for Trump's second term written by conservative thinkers – including some whom Trump has tapped to join his administration – seeks to erase federal protections for LGBTQ+ Americans.

Lori (spouse) is worried that they'll make same-sex illegal.  I told her we're safe from that at least (although others aren't)

1) they say assigned sex at birth is set and stuck
2) we never updated my deadname on the marriage document

therefore, in the eyes of the GOP bigots, we are still husband and wife despite it being contrary to the truth.

I am thankful that she still wants to be married and, weird as it may sound, is fearful that the government may end it.

I love it when you can use their own rhetoric against them!

Not that I want to make light of the situation you are in.  It's gotta hurt.  But I like the justice of pointing out their flawed logic.

Susan and I have the bases covered. When we got remarried in Colorado, they did not require us to end our original marriage. We have two valid marriage certificates, one with my deadname and one with my current name.

Love always -- Jess

I am amazed that the media continues to focus on Project 2025, which Trump denies any connection with. We know he is lying, so why not focus on his own words? His Agenda 47 is posted on his website, and features videos of him speaking the words, and written transcripts of what he said.

It doesn't matter if it is modeled after Project 2025. The threat comes from Agenda 47. We need to identify the threat correctly and educate people about what this means.
