The last two weeks have been a whirlwind for former Canadian Football League fullback-special teams ace Maven Maurer.
"I see other trans people don't get to live the way I get to live," Maurer said. "I don't have to worry about my safety when I leave home because of who I am or who I was or that I look like I can still take care of myself. My experience is vastly different, and a lot of people live in fear.
"Nobody should have to live in fear."
The cheers that rang throughout B.C. Place when she was announced at the club's recent celebration represented a closure, as well as a new beginning, for the trans woman believed to be the first former CFL player to transition genders.
"It was euphoric, and to have your chosen name being announced," she said.
The response those she played with and against has largely been positive. She says many former teammates and opponent have sent messages of acceptance and support.
Her old junior league team immediately changed all references to her in their record books to her rightful name. Both the B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks have acted similarly.
