New Utah state guidelines will require trans girls hoping to play high school sports to be in the process of receiving gender-affirming care, despite such care being banned within the state, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
These new rules were unanimously passed by members of the Utah School Activity Eligibility Commission during a January 6 meeting... The commission's members include vocally anti-LGBTQ+ pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Paul Hruz, who in 2022 testified in support of an Arkansas bill banning gender-affirming care for minors and once said that being transgender is the result of a "social contagion."
Meanwhile, the guidelines added that "athletes who experience male puberty beyond early Tanner Stage 2-4 and have been receiving [gender-affirming] care for less than two years will unlikely be allowed to participate."
In January 2023, Utah effectively banned transition-related care for minors, becoming the fourth state overall to pass sweeping restrictions on such care. By requiring trans girls to receive gender-affirming care in order to qualify as student-athletes in a state where receiving said care is illegal, the commission's rules essentially ban trans girls from sports.
