School Board Refuses To Fire Transgender Teacher

(Toms River, New Jersey) A school board in one of the most conservative counties in New Jersey Monday night refused to bow to pressure from a small group of parents who demanded the removal of a transgendered teacher.

Lily B. McBeth took a leave of absence from her job as a substitute teacher with the Eagleswood School District last year and at age 69 transitioned.  When her physical transformation was complete she petitioned the board to return to work.  The board voted 41 to 1 to return her to her old job.

For some reason I'm unable to get the link to work.  Is there an email address for the School Board where I can write and commend them on their actions?

There really shouldn't be a dispute to begin with but I'm glad the school board saw through this small reckless group of bigots . . .

Later on in the article I noticed this:

The Eagleswood School District is in Ocean County the scene of a bitter fight to win spousal benefits for the domestic partner of a dying police officer.

This is just another reason why we need to not elect anyone to office that opposes gay marriage period. People that transistion will face these same problems and usually will not have money left over for lawyers after SRS.

Sorry to bum out the thread but this newsbit WAS in the article.

I cannot help but to feel a small wave of pride, as Toms River is only 20 minutes away from where I grew up and from where my family still lives.  Though I hadn't previously been aware that Ocean County was one of the most conservative....

The female officer won the battle for benefits, and lost the battle for life one week ago.

Being a school teacher in a state that does not specifically include the transgendered in their legislation, this stoary gives me great hope.

This a link to the eaglewood school contact page.

http://www.eagleswood.org/contact.shtml

I am sure the Supertendent Deborah Synder  dsnyder@eagleswood.org
would be very happy with any supportive email
and could forward them on to Lily McBeth, the teacher in the news story.
