I started working on renewing my passport. It expires in July of 25. I can do it online and I'm doing it online so far. I am down to my photo. I am leaving all the information as is as I have never changed any of that on any of my ID. So I am wondering what to do about my photo. I have different hair. I would like to keep it on for the photo. It is also not even the same color. Is this going to work to take a picture of me now? I would rather not have to remove my hair off to go across a border. Right now I just throw a bandana on when I want to be stealthy.
Thanks.

Hair color, length, and style are minor changes that are considered acceptable. The photo should represent how you normally look, so if you show your passport for ID, they will recognize the photo as you.

Even if it's aftermarket?

Your hair? I wore a wig for my passport photo this past January. No issues. As long as it doesn't cover your face. My bangs did not cover my eyebrows and my hair was along the side of my face in front of my ears. They need to see all of your face, but other than that, I don't think the rest matters.
<--- This wig.
I don't know what crazy rules the USA has in place now, but it is normal for people to change their hair style and colour. The purpose of the passport photo is to assure the border agent that the person offering the passport as identification is indeed the person it was issued to. So it is important that it resembles your normal appearance. That is what the guidelines for Canadian passport photos say: that it must look like your normal appearance.
When I went for my passport photo, I just kept my wig on. No one asked me to take it off, and I didn't offer to. It was my "everyday" wig, so it is how I would normally look boarding a plane. They did ask me to adjust my bangs and the hair over my ears, because eyebrows and ears must be visible. I just did a hand-comb in front of the mirror until the photographer was satisfied that I met the requirements. I got my passport, so I must have done it right.
