Susan's Place Transgender Resources

My fem name for now is Kyla, we'll see how much I like it but anywho...

I'm 40 years old and have known that I have been trans for many years. I just finished Nurse Practitioner school and thought, well I have time on my hand to devote myself to this new adventure so I made my appointment and will start the process in a couple weeks.

My only concern, like everyone elses is are the people I care about going to reject me. Thankfully I have a husband who has known that I've felt this way for many years, and some wonderful friends.

Hi Kyla and wlelcome,

It's so common for people to suspect they are trans for decades before they accept they are trans and all of us can empathise with it, because a lot of us share a similar experience. The biggest step any of us make is accepting who we are, so that's huge for you, but it can take a while after acceptance to get a handle on what flavour of trans you are. In my case, it was an almost unbelievable 40 years, despite more people digging around inside my head than there are archeologists at Pompeii :) You'll doubtless better that :)

Most of us have had to face similar concerns about rejection, but we've a wealth of experience to share on that. The really big positive is your partner is onside and you have friends who are too, so you already have one foot on the magic carpet. Everything to play for!

I'm going to exclude myself from your  "everyone"; I didn't give a rat's patootie what anyone thought about me transitioning. Single, no kids, not in a relationship, parents dead. No obstacles in my path.  :)

I see that other members of Susan's have also welcomed you as well.

Finishing Nurse Practitioner school is an amazing achievement and it shows how dedicated and capable you are.  Starting this new chapter in a few weeks sounds exciting.

Your worries about how loved ones will react are completely normal.  The fact that your husband already understands your feelings and that you have caring friends gives you a strong foundation of support.

Remember that you are not alone here.  This space is filled with people ready to listen and share their experiences.

Take each step at your own pace.  Celebrate every milestone even the small ones.  When doubts arise reach out.  We are here to cheer you on, answer questions or simply offer a friendly ear.

Once you feel comfortable here, it would be appreciated if you add a little bit more about yourself in the other forums and threads.  I would appreciate it very much as, I'm always interested in learning something new about new members.

In addition members of Susan's will more than likely will discuss problems or issues that are similar to yours as most have experienced these issues as well.

I had a busy week, while I'm not 100% "done" with school I have a few hours of clinical left and and we had a 2 day in person event where we had to show off our skills and I passed. So my next hurdle as far as my career goes is taking boards! Scary I'm this close to being responsible for other people's lives in a different capacity, buy I'm ready! 

I'm going to try and be as stealth as long as I can, especially when applying jobs and interviewing. I don't have my appointment for another 2 weeks, and will have me do labs. So could be a bit before I actually start.
